Ryzen 5600X and Rx 5500XT: Temperatures

Last week I bought 

  • Ryzen 5600X
  • Cooler GAMMAX 400 V2
  • Motherboard ASUS B450M
  • Asgard VRAM 8GB (x2)

and I'm since using them with my 1 year old GPU Radeon RX 5500XT (8GB VRAM). According to the AMD control panel, the temps were 49 °C idle for the GPU and 38 °C for the CPU. So I had the idea of attaching the cooler that came with my old Intel Core i5 to the back of the case. That caused the temp of the GPU to drop to 39 °C idle. However I regret doing it, because in the process I ended up accidentally damaging the motherboard's fan connector... Also the Intel cooler makes a lot of noise. So I'd like to know whether or not this 10 °C drop in temperature is worth what I have done... because I'm considering removing the cooler (though that risks further damage to the motherboard). Is 49 °C (GPU) normal?

Why does the idle temp of the GPU matter if it isn't out of spec (usually 110-115C hotspot for AMD GPUs IIRC)?

Mobile/Work Devices: 2020 M1 MacBook Air (work computer) - iPhone 13 Pro Max - Apple Watch S3

The temps you have idle were fine before you tried "modding" the computer. Having extra cooling fans will help your temps as your current configuration of fans may not be the best however, your parts were in the normal temperature range before you even did anything, so I'd say no, it wasn't worth it for you to break your fan header on your motherboard nor mod an intel stock cooler as an exhaust fan.

I'd say you can definitely improve your temps if you want to, but I wouldn't say you need to. If you decide you want to please, properly configure the fans and buy actual case fans, also since you broke a fan header you'll probably need a splitter or two if you plan to do it properly.

because I thought it would be bad for the GPU if it runs at that temperature even with almost no activity.

ohhh I wish I could travel back in time, so I would have asked you guys for your opinion and would not have broken my 1 week old motherboard... by the way, I had to brake the Intel cooler socket in order to have it right behind the GPU in the case.

Honestly kind of impressed how instead of just buying a case fan for $7 or less on Amazon or at a local shop you went straight to breaking and modding motherboards and CPU coolers to install a stock cooler as a case fan. Absolutely wild. Yeah, probably should have asked on some forums first, or just did it properly to begin with instead of doing what you did, but hindsight is 20/20.

what exactly is broken with the fan connector? 

 

i once bent mine a little bit, just bent it back and it worked fine.

That's what happened to mine. It is still working but bent.

so even though both CPU and GPU were in idle, 47 °C (GPU) is normal? I should've realised that! Since the fans are disabled by default for that temp, that means that it is a normal temperature...

basically.  when the gpu fans start spinning "in idle" thats where you could say things are getting hot...

but two things about that, idle is often open for interpretation,  what is idle? to me, and im pretty sure that's a good definition,  idle is 1-2% usage of components,  anything higher is, well, not idle, because obviously its doing "something". 😉

 

and temps generally if they're considered high or not also depends on ambient temp.

 

ps: also the fact the additional fan brought temps down quite a bit indicates to me case ventilation wasnt great to begin with, so you did the right thing,  except in a bit unorthodox way perhaps.

I decided to remove the Intel cooler. Temps are now 47-50 °C (GPU) and 36 °C (CPU) when idle. 🤔
