DT 990 and AMP/DAC and Dolby Atmos via Dolby Access - help me to understand

SamClan

Hallo everyone,

my plan is to get an DT 900 a amp/dac and connect it to my pc, but I want to use Dolby Atmos and for that I need Dolby Access with the Headphone thingi.

But as far as I remember I can't connect the AMP/DAC via USB or Optical only via JACK to use Dolby Access and get my Dolby Atmos.

Am I wrong? How do I connect it?

thanks

You are awesome, stay safe and healthy.

You can have Dolby Atmos turned on for every audio reproduction device in your system. It doesn't matter how it's connected as long as Windows sees it and Windows sees sound cards, amp/dacs etc.

well I doubt that, if I use opitcal cable to connect my av-receiver I can't use dolby atmos.

"Digital optical doesn’t support Dolby Atmos because it can’t transmit the Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD audio codecs (both of which can contain Dolby Atmos audio)"

this is where my question is coming from

My problem is more like a software Problem Dolby Access has to think. oh your AMP/DAC is a headphone I can use my software magic and bring you dolby atmos to your headphone.

I am just not sure if this works if I use anything else than audio jack to connect AMP/DC and Pc

I am using a Xonar U5 USB soundcard, a cheap USB soundcard from AliExpress, a Type-C USB DAC, the onboard Realtek, a USB soundbar (at work) and so on.

All of them allow choosing Dolby Atmos in the sound settings as well as DTS that I have.

Thank you, you are saying any DAC that is connected via usb should work.

with that information I am gonna get myself a DAC. gonna mark you as solved as soon as I have tried it

I even tried connecting my bluetooth tws earpohones and it allows turning Dolby Atmos on them too.

But if you plan on using it with games that don't feature Dolby Atmos, plese don't, although more fun the sound isn't as positionally accurate as without it.

I don't use Dolby Atmos for headphones, but it looks like you're mixing up between spatial sound and format. You're right about optical not supporting Dolby Atmos on AV receiver when trying to play movies or games with Atmos support. However 'Dolby Atmos for headphones' is different, that would emulate surround sound from stereo headphones, and any connection should work including optical cable.

I'd probably get a topping DX3 instead of that soundblaster.

The dx1 is cheaper but the dx3 will give much higher power output at 300ohm, so if you can afford it get that instead.

But as far as I see it doesn't have Mikrofone in.

I would sacrifice that feature for better sound

Good point. Though the DT990 is pretty overrated but from the owners, it's a fine headphone indeed.

How are the sibilance and the annoying "T"? Painful or smooth?

DT880 is underrated but it's a very good headphone too. And yes, gaming headphones are trash, not do they only sound trash, they also look like trash.

Yep, that's what I fear. The issues like the "S" and "T" is what keeps me away from the DT990. But since you EQ it, enjoy it!

Wether it's worth it or not is entirely subjective. Since you already have the DT990, I'd say, keep it if you like it and don't get the DT880 in order to keep your money for other, especially if it's a lot more expensive.

all good, I bought the dt990 with the option to send it back and get my money back too.

if the dt880 is not as good as I want it to be, I will try the HD600.

by no means the dt990 is bad, but the high "t" and "s" sounds are a little bit annoying. and if there is another option why not try it. I will keep you updated

Yep, I can totally relate to the very annoying "t" and "s". Unbearable. The reloading sounds of the weapons in GTAV and painful "t" in voices...

well 350 EUR would be maximum I want to go

so technically the HD600 sennheiser are in range but I am not a fan of the split kable, I like when there is only one on one side and not on both
