Gadda

So my gpu just broke and I ordered a 3080, do you think my 750w unit will be enough?

If the GPU draws more power than the PSU could handle, it would just shutdown. Because it tripped the over current protection of the PSU.

Since you already have the PSU, might as well try it.

If it shutdown, first try to undervolt the GPU so it would draw less power, therefore the transient spikes would also be lower. If maximum undervolt is achieved and you still trip the OCP, then time for a new PSU.

That said, most people would recommend to go a step above the recommended PSU capacity for RTX series, just to be safe.

Okay I'll just try when it gets here then. If not would you guys recommend an 850w or even higher?

Run a benchmark on a game with RTX like Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Helped me find issues with my 5+ year old 750W PSU.

As an owner of a RTX 3080 FTW3 with 3 pcie connectors, 5600X, and rm850x - Yes I do recommend 850W to run the PSU a bit quieter, cooler, and more efficiently while mitigating transient power spikes.

One weird gotcha to rm850x is that depending on the year it was designed it will either come with 3 pcie cables (2018 model) or only 2 pcie cables (IIRC, 2021). I happened to buy the former specifically for the 3 cables. Corsair might be okay with swapping out an EPS cable with one of their pcie cables, but of course that's an extra cost.

Supposedly Corsair or RMXs have thicker cable wire than most (they are stiffer in my experience), and reviews indicated capacitors are in the cable. So they might be more likely to handle high wattage better than other PSUs when daisy chaining 2 connectors to 1 cable.
