I would use JAMF over SimpleMDM, as Apple themselves use JAMF software

Well this video couldn't have come at a better time for me, as I was looking at buying an M2 Air, and throwing Parallels and Windows games on it. But not anymore.

I hope they continue making machines without fans. I only got the M1 because it didn't have one! 

 

It does slow down a TON during photo editing, if I don't prop it up for better airflow.

If your workload is 80% video editing, music production, photoshop, lightroom, etc, M2 Air is not meant for that, that is why they have the Pro line up. M2 Air is for everyday common task like web browsing, media consumption, zoom meetings, etc..

Although 16gb 14" mbp is priced the same so yup bad pricing for apple. We will need to wait for M2 macbook pro that will be announce next month see if there will be a price increase..

There's already an M2 Pro, it just unfortunately doesn't have Magsafe, and has the touchbar.

Yup but its not "Pro" as it should be. especially for the higher price you have to pay. Its better to get the 14" mb pro than M2 Pro for that price, again if your work depends on it.

This confirmed that I made the right choice with my X1 nano. I wanted an ultra portable machine since I do most of my work away from my desktop and carry my laptop in a bad all day. Both the M2 air and the Nano looked great on paper. The Nano however has a fan that does kick in when needed, and also has an amazing keyboard. Don't regret my choice one bit.

That is also true but some of the people who belongs to this category are full time travel bloggers, they are editing their videos while traveling. I dont expect them to bring a desktop computer with them.

That's just not true. You need a laptop if you're a field photographer, a video producer who needs to cut videos on site, or a musician with a digital element to live gigs (DJs, anyone?). For that matter, any creator who can't justify both a laptop and a desktop is going to care a lot about getting the most from a laptop. I myself have done serious pro work, image editing included, in coffee shops... and pubs, and hotel rooms, and airports.

 

Some creative jobs just aren't and can't be tied to an office.

Why not test with a thermal pad? If you care about performance, you would care enough to drop a MASSIVE $15 on a thermal pad to make the chassis into a heatsink. Perhaps with this revolutionary new idea that certainly hasn't existed since at least 2015, if not later, we can regain our performance back. Because, realistically, who is editing video on their laps? Who is playing a AAA title on a Macbook their laps?

 

And it would be cheaper than the Pro.

The video comes to some familiar conclusions. The Air M2's performance is just dandy for most users, but the 14-inch Pro makes more sense if you need to spec up the Air beyond a certain point.

 

What most intrigues me: how the Air M2 absolutely kicks the XPS 13 Plus' ass in performance and battery life. It's only clearly ahead in some tests, but where it isn't the differences are negligible despite a fanless design and a thinner body. If Dell is the out-of-shape person who completed just enough training to finish a marathon coughing and wheezing, Apple is the seasoned veteran who barely broke a sweat.

May be in a studio, but many still use a laptop as the PC.

Watched whole video, some spots even twice and in conclusion nothing informative was given - only thing I am left with is a sh*tty misleading clickbait thumbnail and title. Linus claims to be a non-biased informative tech-tuber and reviewer. Yet all I see is biased clickbait and everything positive ALWAYS has to be followed by some "but..." when it comes to Apple products. BUT when it's a LTT fanboy sponsor company all the negatives magically disappear.

Whole video in a nutshell - if you run stress tests on your PC your CPU will get hot. Like wow, who would've thought!

 

The Windows "competitor" they chose random comes and goes within the comparisons. Charts are up for five seconds whilst Linus reads the script as fast as possible and legends on the charts don't give any real information about the computers being compared. Script and charts don't even match. Windows laptop had one or two more FPS in a single benchmark, but according to script it was somehow beating the Macbook entire time? Script says 35%, charts show 40% and 36%. Also what kind of a laptop review is just bunch of arbitrarily chosen benchmarks? Are we reviewing entire computer or just the SOC? Is this the big future of LTT, the god of tech reviews? Let's build a multi-million ruble facility to throw together a 10 minute speed run of benchmark charts?

It would be much better if I didn’t find it so hard to justify the base spec 14” Pro. 
 

$2k just like an almost topped-out M2 Air, but you get half the memory bandwidth of the M1 Max, only a 512gb SSD, only 16gb of unified memory, two fewer processing cores than the Max, and a GPU that’s significantly cut-down from the higher Max variants. Just seems like a waste to buy the Pro and not get any of the actual benefits, aside from just a fan.

 

Of course it’s faster than the M2, but it seems like a “baller on a budget” option and I’d always know I cheaped-out.

1. Not sure why you think he claims to be a non-biased informative tech-tuber and reviewer since to my knowledge he doesn't.
2. He didn't write this episode so while he may have partially injected his opinions the way that they were tested as well as the script that he read were done by Anthony and Jake who both have used and I think even might currently use Macbooks as their laptops.
3. XPS 13 probably was used since for a 13 inch laptop for consumers it is one of the more popular ones.
4. I don't think even Linus would call their channel the god of tech reviews he has said that LTT itself is meant to be easily approachable mostly surface level about all sorts of tech though mostly focused on a video game player perspective(That's the explanation for why they still don't have much in terms of programmer related tests).

The XPS 13 Plus is supposed to be the Windows world's foil for the MacBook Air — a thin-and-light machine that packs a better CPU than you'd expect in that class. If anything was going to clearly beat the Air, this was going to be it.

 

I'd expect a regular XPS 13 to offer better battery life, and you can get long-lived Windows laptops from other brands. But it does seem like Apple has a difficult-to-replicate blend, even if it's not the best at everything.

$2k just like an almost topped-out M2 Air, but you get half the memory bandwidth of the M1 Max, only a 512gb SSD, only 16gb of unified memory, two fewer processing cores than the Max, and a GPU that’s significantly cut-down from the higher Max variants. Just seems like a waste to buy the Pro and not get any of the actual benefits, aside from just a fan.

 

Of course it’s faster than the M2, but it seems like a “baller on a budget” option and I’d always know I cheaped-out.

I'm curious to see what the next 14-inch Pro's performance looks like. I wouldn't expect a huge leap, but the M2 Pro chip (even in its base form) will probably have enough of an edge over the regular M2 that it'll be easier to justify even if you don't care for the 14-inch model's other benefits.

 

As it stands, the M1 Max won't necessarily help much in some scenarios compared to the M1 Pro. Your videos might not encode much quicker, and your middling-demand tasks might not be noticeably faster. It's mainly for the folks who know they need the most possible computing power and are willing to give up a bit of battery life for the privilege.

1. He literally talks about tech reviewers being most important people for consumers in tech world and that's why he is in this business and why he is building a super high tech lab. There is no point in a performance and benchmark oriented review when all thoughts in it are skewed. Might as well watch a MKBHD video at this point and he'll get to the points and thoughts much faster and clearer.
2. While true, I am sure he reviewed it. If not, I would find it rather odd he phrased an opinion or two as "I personally...".

3. I am not sure why you are replying with this? I get it is a decent competitor in size class, but my critique was more about how in some comparisons the XPS was simply discarded and only comparison was made with other Apple laptops. What's the point of a comparison when one of the subjects disappears without an explanation why it was not included. Overall it was still more of a SOC comparison than a laptop review.
4. Let's be real - Linus is building the giant lab because he has the need to be the king in the industry.
