Did you know that you can identify people by the shape of their ears? Just like fingerprints? What might be comfortable to ME to just super-glue into my ear, might be horrible-to-you. Keep that in mind with any advice you're going to get here.

I myself hate headphones, and I'll just use my almost 25 yo desktop speakers built INTO my wall, as a source of sound for when I'm sleeping.

My Anker Soundcore Q20 headphones are pretty darn comfortable, with noise cancellation, Bluetooth, and under $100.

I don't sleep with headphones, I need the ambient noise, but they are comfortable with a pillow behind my head listening to music, so take from that what you will.

For earBUDS I prefer my N400NC but those are a little above budget for you. (I got them on fire sale for $50)

how effective is the noise canceling in your experience? what about battery life? is it viable to replace the ear cushions with aftermarket ones?

The ear cushions are memory foam and supple leather, super comfy. Blasting at full volume to overpower family members with hearing loss who can't hear the tv below 80db, it's a good 4hrs; listening at sane volume: probably close to 10+ with anc on, 16 with it off. Noise cancelling works pretty well on the Anker's, works super well with the N400NC's.

i looked up the q20s and they are $60, i have a bit more to spend than that with a budget of $100, do you suppose i can get more if i spend the full 100?

Depends, looking solely at price often has you spending more without getting more. If the budget went to 150, I'd say get the N400NC buds hands down. The Q30s are the newer version with supposedly better ANC and have type C charging, they usually go for 80-90 iirc

I skipped all of the replies here, but wearing headphones while you sleep is not an easy task.  The only way to do it and meet all of your requirements would be to sleep on your back through the entire night.

Other than that, $100 wireless and ANC don't go well together from what I understand

I can add that I have been sleeping with a sleeping mask that has thin headphones built in to them, and it's pretty cheap, think it's a sleep cozy or something.  But it's off before the night is over due entirely to the fact that I move a lot when I sleep.  No ANC but it's a route to look into

any suggestion for over ear options in the $150 price range? the person who will be using them doesnt like in-ears.

That's fair, Sony WH-CH700N headphones come highly rated, and Sony's and Bose ANC is the gold standard so there's that.
