Would I benefit from decreasing my monitor refresh rate?

Lately I've noticed that most my games are around 120 FPS (give or take), but my monitor is running at 165hz

 

I haven't noticed any tearing or stutters but I was wondering... should simply set my monitor refresh rate to 120hz?

Depends.

1. If your monitor native refresh rate is 165hz and not overclock mode - they is no benefits reduce the refresh rate.
2. If 165hz is overclock mode - then yes reduce to next refresh rate (normally will be 144hz) for gain better image quality, for example manage to choose 10-bit than 8-bit color.

Wouldn't it look more smooth or something like that? Having the game run at 120 FPS and the monitor at 120Hz, without V-sync

No, it won't. Reducing the hz actually may make your games tearing if it suddently reach 121 FPS. But this is totally avoid in 165hz as your gaming is around 120 FPS and never reach 166FPS.
