"The RTX 4090 looks weird"... Probably because for the video thumbnail somebody mirrored the image and photoshopped the Geforce RTX logo backwards, which I presume was done for clickbait.

Fixed. Now it just looks like a normal graphics card with some rounded edges on the fan shroud and backplate ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Honest question - do you find this title and thumbnail clickbaity in a bad way? Why?

From my perspective - the card looks weird with the rounded edges! We're not promising anything that we don't deliver. We flipped the Geforce text because the card looked better on the right side, and it would be weird to have flipped text, so

Depends how you define bad clickbait. Taking a familiar object and manipulating slightly in a way that isn't immediately obvious gives an 'uncanny valley' feeling of unease. I saw the thumbnail and my immediate reaction was "there's something not right about that", and it was only after looking at it for a few seconds that I realised that it was mirrored. So if your definition of good clickbait is something that catches people's attention then it worked. I spent more time looking at that thumbnail than I otherwise would have. After I realised that the image had been altered it comes across as desperation, that you know the topic on its own merit isn't interesting enough to warrant people spending their time watching the video so you need to manipulate it and sensationalize it to draw people in.

Obviously a graphics card like how it is pictured with the PCIe fingers on the opposite side wouldn't be compatible with any existing cases, so by showing that manipulated image really you're saying more than it just looks weird. There's the implication that "new graphics cards aren't compatible with existing systems", which is a completely different thing and not the story.

If a video is titled "Brad Pitt looks so weird now!" and the thumbnail was Brad Pitt Photoshopped to look incredibly ill or disfigured, then the video goes on to show that Brad Pitt is looking the same handsome self as he always does but he just cut his hair, that to me would be bad clickbait - even if you argue that it still answered the question of what does Brad Pitt look like.

I saw the news articles and forum thread before the techlinked video, so I had already seen what the card looked like. I personally didn't think it looked that weird, it's just a regular card with some rounded edges on the fan shroud. Maybe I'm getting old but I actually prefer that look over the aggressive gamer sharp edges that some other fan shrouds have had in the past, or that weird plastic mouth thing EVGA had on their 3080.

Spoiler

Can't unsee this.

Its also rather disingenuous to say "The RTX 4090 looks weird" when its just one particular model.  But we know LTT titles are ALWAYS clickbait because of YouTubes crappy algorithm requiring it to get coverage.

There's already been supposed leaks of 4080 FE looking just slightly different to the 3090 FE.

However much I liked the 3080 FE, when I heard it ran hotter than AIB models, that put me off.  Function over form every time for me.

Oooooh interesting. I had not even thought about the fact that people could interpret the thumb as indicating the PCIe connector was on the wrong side, primarily because we did not do that on purpose!
Full context: Historically, I've made every TechLinked thumbnail, unless I'm out of the office. That changed recently - we've got a graphics person making video thumbnails now, which I review before posting. They're not a very technical person, so I'm guessing they didn't know that reversing the image would make it look that weird. Obviously they knew to reverse the text, though. When I reviewed the thumb, I didn't notice anything weird!

The point is - this was not intentional manipulation to trick viewers into clicking on a disingenuous thumbnail!

I'll let the thumb artist know about this and pay more attention to these kind of details in the future.

I can understand why you think this Brad Pitt analogy applies here, but I have to disagree. We didn't manipulate the card in any way other than simply mirroring it, and it looks so similar that I didn't even notice it was flipped until you brought this up. My guess is that you were more aware of this because you had seen the card before, and DIDN'T think it looked weird - to me, it looked really different! lol. I don't remember ever seeing a graphics card with rounded edges like that, but I've only been on the "pc gamer scene" since 2013. I honestly thought the GPU itself was enough of a clickable thing without modifying it at all.

To make sure I wasn't tripping I searched the comments for any other complaints about the thumbnail, and only found these:

The sad reality of YouTube is that we have to use thumbnails and titles that are the most likely to get clicks, because that's our livelihood. But LMG as a whole strives to only make "legitbait" as described in Veritasium's excellent video on the subject.  To me, because this card looks basically the same, this is legitbait, and I feel like that's supported by the lack of comments on the video - BUT I don't want to let this stand in case other people are indeed feeling deceived. So I just asked the thumb-maker to flip the card back and it's uploaded to YT now: image.jpeg

I totally understand the reasoning, but I do think its rather borderline to say "The RTX 4090 looks weird" rather than "The Zotac RTX 4090 looks weird" or "The RTX 4090 may look weird".

Personally, I've kinda stopped caring about it so much as like you say, LMG needs to maintain their revenue stream.  But I'm not sure I'd call it "legitbait" as its still a misleading title, making it sound like ALL 4090 cards are going to look weird when we have zero evidence to suggest that.  Its not like its new for the odd AIB to decide to try something a bit different to make them distinct from the mainstream cards.

It's a weird-looking card even without the image flipped. It seems like the design philosophy was that adding curves would make it sleeker, but at this size it just makes it look bloated in a way that harder angles wouldn't have.

Not a card I would want to put in a system where I could see it.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

I thought it had been done intentionally to make it look weirder and get more people curious to click on the video, though judging by the fact nobody else commented on the image that probably wouldn't have worked anyway.

I noticed something looked off about it but I had to stare at it for at least 10 seconds before realising why the image looked wrong, and it seems like nobody else noticed either, so I can definitely understand somebody who isn't super familiar with building PC's or graphics cards not noticing a detail like that.

I shouldn't have been so quick to cry clickbait, but I do appreciate you taking the time to ask about it and follow up on it.
