Gen 4 SSD in Gen 3 Motherboard?

Soupbowl

I am planning on getting a 980 pro or sn850, but I just wanted to make sure that it would work on a motherboard that only supports gen 3 speeds? More specifically, an MSI B450 Tomahawk (non-max). I have an sn750 500gb right now and do plan on upgrading my motherboard soon and putting it in as a secondary drive. Will something like an sn850 work until I get a new motherboard? Thanks.

Most, if not all PCIe4s will operate at PCIe3 if PCIe4 is not available. But it's kind of a waste of money to do so if you're not getting the speed. I tend to recommend the WD Blue SN570... Have had two with no issues.

I don't badmouth others' input, I'd appreciate others not badmouthing mine. *** More below ***
