WD Red NAS Drive for games

So my current situation is that i am running out of storage on my WD Black 4TB, Ive noticed best buy has WD Reds on sale, they are Currently Advertising a WD Red 8TB 7200RPM Drive For $194,99.

Would this drive be fine to run as a Games Drive, or what are the differences between this WD red and a WD Black.

thanks for the info

Yea a wd red will work, any sata hdd will work here.

But I'd avoid a WD red drive as there smr, so random write performance is very bad. If you want a cheap drive Id just get a barracude or blue, they will work about the same here. If you want a better drive Id get a red plus or ironwolf as those are often the cheapest with cmr.

Alright, both the barracuda and Blue are both only 5400 RPM, not too sure how much that would effect the performance over a 7200 rpm WD black

I don't think the 5400rpm will make a difference. Bigger drives are faster, so a 8tb barracuda should still be plenty fast for games.

One other options is to get this guy https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/wd-easystore-8tb-usb-3-0-desktop-external-hard-drive-wdbama0080hbk-nese-black-only-at-best-buy/14936768

Remove the drive from the case, should be a 7200rpm cmr drive, and better and cheaper than the red.

Though it's worth noting they use inferior HDDs in their external enclosures.

One of the reps stated this in a reply to me, but it was probably a year ago if not longer.

Alright ill take a look at that, ill probably end up with a WD Blue if the performance isn't too far off a 7200 RPM WD Black

Honestly if you care about speed enough to consider a WD Black, you should really be looking at a SSD. Prices for a descent drive with good capacity for a few games have gone down enough to be attainable.

I personally don't see the upsides of a WD Black at this day and age.

External drives use the same drives as internal drives. You just don’t necessarily know what drive you will get, but it’s not special drives specifically for external enclosures.

i know, ive torn apart external drives before to harvest the drive inside of them, you never know what you will get and ive had a few issues using the drives out of external enclosures
