Should I buy i3 12100f or i5 12400f?

For my new PC, I have a budget of 1k USD. My original plan was to use the 12400f but it's price was recently raised and its now out of budget. I'm looking to do 1440p gaming and I'm wondering if the i3 would be sufficient for that. I also plan on getting a 165hz monitor so I would like to get at least 100-120 on most games at medium- high settings. It would be nice to be able to save 70$ on my cpu, but I don't know if 4 cores is enough.

This is the list of components I plan to get

first of all the PCpartpicker link doesn't work, second if you want you could go ryzen 5500 and also save money on the cooler because it comes with one. To save even more you could get a used 20 series and it would be more than enough for 1440p gaming

the i3-12100 and i5-12400 both also come with a CPU cooler. Also in US pricing, the Ryzen 5 3600 and the 5500 are too close in pricing to recommend the 5500. It has a lot less cache and only PCIe 3.0. It's not as fast in a lot of games. Plus you get guaranteed compatibility on a lot of older good B450 mobos out of the box, while the 5500 is new and would need a BIOS update on a lot of boards.

@Stiva11the i3-12100 is not a bad CPU, pretty good single core performance means it's decent for high refresh rate gaming. worthwhile to save now, and maybe in a few years you scoop up a used i7-13700 or something. Spending less on the CPU means you can spend a bit more on the motherboard too

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

once you get the partpicker open, let us know.  But for the resolution you're shooting for, you want the i5.  With your budget, you need the i3 🙂

Not sure $1000 PC will do 120+ at 1440p, especially when monitor price included.

sorry about the link not working first time

With the i3 I have about 100$ to spend on other components + peripherals, with i5 I have 30$.

Some people were talking about using the stock cooler, but I've had to live with a trashy cooler in my prebuilt that sounded like a jet engine and I'm not entirely sure about using it, but if the sound levels + cooling are decent then I might go for it.

What about Ryzen 5 5600? Performs very similar to the 12400F, and is currently cheaper. You also won't have to use a crappy motherboard like in your parts list. The stock cooler is also somewhat decent, a lot better than the Intel one. Only downside is that you can't upgrade to anything newer, while the 12400F can be upgraded to 13th gen.

You'd need some changes

- Cheaper cooler (or use the stock one)

- Better board

- Better RAM, don't get CL22 RAM !!

I'd say go for the 12400 price difference isn't that much, and total is just below $1000 already

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Intel-Core-i3-12100F-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-5600X/m1755631vs4084

this benchmark says that the i3 and ryzen 5 5600 are basically the same processor but with different prices. Idk if benchmarks like these matter much im new to pc building. About the MB, if I go for the i3 then I will have the opportunity to get a better one.

Userbenchmark isn't reliable at all, and this is a great example of it.

The 12400F and 5600 perform very similar, and beat the 12100F by a lot. I linked some reviews of the 5600, which compare it to the other CPU's.

You were told above not to get CL22 RAM.  Why did you not use the really damn good list provided for you above?

Use the stock cooler. Even at 100% duty cycle, it's not really that loud.

Also, if you're running the 12400F stock, the stock fan will probably never spin up, the cpu runs super cool because of the shotty boosting it does. But even if you lock a 40x multiplier, you can leave vcore at default and it'll run super cool 70c or less at full load.

About the boosting, starts all core 4ghz. After maybe 20 seconds or w/e, it'll lower to 3.6ghz.

So save the 40 bucks on the tower cooler and apply it else where. I run mine 4.6ghz OC with bclk on the stock cooler. A larger cooler won't do anything except help you spend money on something you don't need.

I have a 12400F. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!!!
