cpu limits gpu?

i have an intel i7 6700k and a msi 970 but wanted too upgrade my gpu does my cpu limit my options there?

Is your CPU overclocked? Depending on what games you're playing, the 6700K can handle some pretty decent performance. Assuming it's alongside somewhat fast ram, and has some good clock speed, why not upgrade to a used GTX 1080 ti

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

 

How many watts do I need? ATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explained, group reg is bad

My i7 6700k worked well up until a GTX 1080 ti.

 

So I would say a GTX 1080 ti, RTX 2080 or a RTX 3060.

What're you planning to upgrade to?  A 6700k is still perfectly functional.

600 -800 trying to play vr got it to work on my 970 but runs like ass

Then get a 3080 12GB, maybe it'll be bottlenecked but who cares, it'll have the best perf you can expect ? 🙂

It depends on how many frames you want

 

But the 6700k should be fine if you dont go over the 90fps
