I Think I Fried My HDD PCB, How Do I Restore My Data?

ozhmium

Seeking a wizard in the realm of PCBs!

I recently upgraded my PC, including the power supply. The thing is, I forgot to change out the SATA power cables to my D drive with the desktop and other files. Since they aren't compatible with each other, I ended up shorting my computer, when the incorrect SATA power cables were removed it booted okay, since my C is on an M.2.

The problem now is that I shorted by HDD. Since plugging in the SATA power cable (the right one) into the HDD with no data wire, it doesn't spin. This lead me to suspect that my data could be fine, but the PCB, or parts of it, have been fried. It's a Barracuda Compute, 4TB. I also just bought a new, fresh Barracuda Compute, 4TB, and that one spins; my power supply and cable are okay.

Is there a way I could get the data out of the old HDD? Or somehow get the old HDD to work for just a bit longer so I can clone it to the new one?

For reference's sake my board number is 100815595.

try a pc repair shop, preferably Chinese. they're the only ones that I've seen with actual experience with de/soldering pcps and they will most likely know how to recover your data. or you could try one of the online data recovery sites that require you to ship the hdd over and they would do it too.

are the pcb's from the fried one and the new one identical?

No. They're not. The "old" HDD I got 4ish months ago, the "new" HDD earlier today, and they're both 4Tb Barracuda Compute HDDs. Alas, the new one has PCB model number

100870255 (rev A, i don't think this matters) and the old one has 100815595.

I think it's plausible they are compatible, but I'm not going to try until there's proof out there that they are indeed intercompatible.

Does your drive still have warranty?

Could be, I don't know. The shop I bought it from though knows that it's my fault I shorted the HDD by using the wrong SATA power cable because they helped me figure it out.

I don't know if I'm covered.

call some data recovery specialist, you could try and do it yourself, if you get lucky.. good. if you dont, chances are you made it harder for the pro's to do their thing.

First of all don't even attempt if the drive model, revision and firmware between the donor and target mismatches however slightly, there is absolutely no guarantee that different firmware versions won't ruin the data on it.

Secondly, some HDDs have per-device calibration data stored on the board, swapping them just won't work unless you also swap the flash chips containing the data.
