Will my case destroy my harddisks?

Hello!

I'm planning a NAS, and I want to spend as little as possible. I have a PC with 4 HDD slots, but the mounting mechanism has me worried. You slide it in and then it screws in on one side only. I'm looking to buy Ironwolf pro (4TB), but I'm worried this mounting mechanism can make the drives die?

Usually the slide ins have the connectors on the inside and the drive snaps right into them.  The single screw is to hold the drive in place.

 

Why would a NAS have a mounting mechanism that can kill drives?  You realize you screw in HDD's in your PC case right?  It's standard practice.

 

The case just has the cable connectors you're used to as fixtures inside you push the drive onto.  Same thing different style

I'm using an old gamingPC case, i dont even know what brand or model, could be some wank brand with terrible mounting for all I know

Oh, you're using a PC case as the NAS. I thought you were building an actual NAS, sorry.

 

So yeah, 1 screw is all the drive needs, it's not like they're going anywhere.  Drives are meant to be screwed in (they have threaded holes after all), in the olden days. Now we use clips springs or trays (that may or may not have screws).

As long as when they are in they are pretty secure, it’ll be fine.

My HDDs are mounted with thick foam tape and they are fine, maybe even better isolated from the vibrations than with the standard mounting system... as long as they are not sliding around they should be fine

NAS drives are designed to tolerate the vibrations caused by having an array of them hard mounted to the same chassis. Real rack mount servers certainly don't bother with anti-vibration dampening. If anything, PC cases use rubber bushings to help isolate the vibrations so you hear them less, not for the good of the drive.

 

Hard drives have been screwed directly to metal chassis since hard drives were invented. As long as they're not so loose they're in danger of falling out, they'll be fine.
