DDR5 for AMD Zen 4

AMD's new Zen 4 architecture is soon(ish) due for release, with support for DDR5.

What should one look for in the "mid-high range" DDR5 memory for this platform the next months?

no way of knowing until the boards are released with their specs and QVL lists

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

Its either paying for overpriced 6000+ bin for hynixes or being an intellectual and buying some 4800 16gb bare pcb hynix sticks off ebay

Qvl shouldnt be a worry imo, its only some asus boards where qvl matters but for the most part its dead and you can use whatever ic you want. For higher end ics featured on said 6000+ bin kits or in the form of bare pcbs theyre basically guaranteed to work cause no board manufacturer would want to deal with ppl getting pissed off at them for not supporting their fancy 6000+ sticks

Tell that to everyone who has memory problems after building their frustration box.

Good point though it seems like most of the problems come from binning or xmp issues rather than ic issues

Ive never heard of any instances of new boards straight up refusing a brand of ics other than my p5q and giga ep45 absolutely dispising hynixes but these are 12+ year old boards which are obv less sophisticated than new boards, so i assume most of it is just down to either bad binning or bad xmp. If it wont run even at jedec spec then that would be a dud or an ic issue

Zen3/Corsair Vengeance for instance. But people post here everyday about memory problems. It’s not just Corsair either..

Also, the vast majority of people are only interested in XMP performance. They want the best out of box experience with no muss and no fuss. Almost no one cares about memory over clocking except the exceptional enthusiast. And we are few and far in between when you look at the numbers of the masses..

Not exactly hard to just steal a profile off the internet for your ic and set it, though i get ppl are pretty damn lazy when it comes to tuning even when most of it is already done for em

Well corsair is not exactly the cheapest (silicon power usually claims that title) so rip everyone loyal to corsair and just got screwed over, they are among the most popular rams though so not surprised ppl mostly report corsair having problems

For the most part Corsair is just a higher end Thermaltake. Its not really their products, they just put their name on someone else's. Its not a bad thing, just a fact.

  • 1 month later...

Time to bump this, I think, as AMD's 7000-series have been released.

It has been said that DDR5-6000 would be the "sweet spot" due to something about a "2:1:1" relationship with clock speeds or such.

Does this still hold true? Are there other memory speeds that will work as well, or better, without having to tweak memory settings in the BIOS?

In other words, which memory works best out of the box?
