What caused my PSU to fail?

umbles
Go to solution Solved by tkitch,

The game 110% did not cause the PSU to fail.

Either it was a surge, or the PSU just failed.  (Since it seems like the hardware survived fine.)

And an 850W PSU is mooooore than enough for that hardware.

So a few days ago my PSU popped and was dead. This happened while I was playing Frostpunk endless mode, where I was pretty late into it. It was a 6 year old EVGA 850G2. Today I just installed my new PSU, a Corsair RM850X. I enjoy playing Frostpunk, but am now hesitant to play endless mode again. Do you think it was the game's late game content that caused the crash? Or that I had a lower end 6 year old PSU?

Any input would be great
TY

To reinforce: games do not kill PSU's.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

The PSU failed because it's a 6 year old PSU that was kind of mediocre to begin with.  Nothing more.  Play on.

Not sure why the G2 would be mediocre, it was a great PSU. There could be other reasons to this such as bad house wiring, etc. If you're getting dirty power from the outlet, eventually it could murder even the best PSUs, just some food for thought.

Superflower has fantastic engineering.  But the QC can be sometimes lacking.  That's all.
