Debate about that GTX 1630... yeah

Mickaaa

Yeess... i'd like to debate about the GTX 1630 !

It's been few days since it released and it already have a pretty bad reputation.. for.. euh .. mainly good reasons ..

BUT the question is ... is it really still possible (let alone profitable for manufacturers) to build well-performing low-price gpu (like those legendaries GTX 1050ti or RX570) anymore ?

Perhaps there are non-variable costs that have increased since the pandemic and "complicated" the process of making "cheap" gpus 😕

But, of course, not anyone can spent +300€ on a decent dedicated GPU and those people need "something to buy" .... whatever that "something" is worth the money or not..

..and for the used market... euhhh . it depend on where you live and sometimes something weaker but newer (and more effecient) is a better idea (imo)

But here we are ! feel free to share your thought with me, i'm very curious to know what you think!

Are there reasons to sell it?

Yes:  People will buy it.
See:  The GT710 was being sold in the last 12 months still, because people bought them.

Does it need to exist?  If it was a 125$ or under card?  It'd be a great HTPC Card to use for that sort of thing.  At 170+?  It's too expensive to be justified right now.

Lol, now that you mention the GT 710, it make me think.... why still people buying this gpu despite being less powefull than any modern iGPU ?

Are people not aware about intel HD graphics or vega ?

My guess is that consumers are contradictory, they don't want bad gpus.... but they still buy them anyway

Perfect exemple is the RX 6500XT: here in france, it launched for nearly 300€ --> nobody bought it (because it s*cked) --> so it drops to 200€ in less than a month and people bought it because it was now at a GOOD price!

So why people don't just wait...?!?

And now that we have 2060's for less than 300€ ... people won't buy them because "Oooh no ! we need to wait for those RTX 4000 gpus with their 50000watt tdp and prices at 6X MSRP"..... wtf... -_-

The question will really be around what wafer costs and per chip manufacturing costs are for lower end products. Wafer costs will be the same regardless of what chips you are making on it. So it could absolutely be that these have risen to a point where there is no way to really effectively make sub $200 cards anymore. It could also be that AMD/Nvidia are just greedy. Or maybe a combo. We really don't know.

GTX 1050Ti legendary? There has never been a time that gpu made any sense whatsoever to buy. Now RX 570 on the other hand is the best budget gpu we have seen in the last 10 years.

Not true. The fact it didn't need supplemental power from a 6 or 8 pin PCIe made it the go-to for easily making budget gaming machines out of office prebuilts, like the 750 ti before it.

The RX 470/570 is a very solid budget card as well, but I wouldn't really compare the two of them. The 1050 ti was the "I only want to run esports stuff like LoL, DOTA, Rocket League, etc." card. The 570 was a "I actually want to be able to run some AAA stuff at 1080p moderate settings" card.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Hi fellow Frenchman !

I *did* get a GT710 recently, but used for 20 bucks and only as a spare/test bench GPU for CPUs without iGPU, so there's a market 🙂

But ok I could have gotten a 730 lol

Now the 1630 is another beast, it shows how much NVidia is now f*cked up and greedy :

- It's a design nonsense, as it's not powerful enough to neither play AAA titles @1080p at 30+ stable fps, nor play lighter competitive games at 100+ fps

Now it makes the 6500XT looks like a good GPU (if only they hadn't committed this PCie x4 nonsense) !!

- Price is just absurd, $150 vs even a 6400 which is under $180 and is 50% faster ! I agree with you that it'll soon drop around $120 or even $100
