MXM gpu upgrade.

Tscott

Hi,

I have a laptop with a weak gpu in it. It is a 670m, which is 75w

I'm wanting to upgrade to a gtx 970m, which I can get pretty cheap, however it's 100w.

I am wondering if this will make a significant difference to the laptops cooling capabilities? Or will it overheat?

The only other alternative in the 75w range is a 770m.

A new laptop isn't really an option, on the used market they cost around 4x the price of me upgrading my mxm module.

Am totally comfortable editing .inf files, that's no problem.

Anyone with any experience in this?

Thanks.

What laptop?

99% of thr time a gpu upgrade is impossible due to a bios lock.

Also if this is to play modern day games then it won't do. A gtx 970m is no longer a 1080p low settings card even.

Other challenges are:

Cooler has to fit

Gpu has to work with the power budget

Generational leaps of hardware

It is a qosmio x70.

I didn't consider bios lock. Have only experienced that on HP laptops.

Just for a bit of context, I can get a 770m or 970m for $150-200 aud.

A second hand laptop with 6th gen i5 and gtx 1050 is in the range of $800-1000 aud.
