Best pbo settings for 5800x?

Just for transparency, my cpu isn't overheating and the most it will ever reach is 80 degrees (which will eventually drop itself down to 50-60s very shortly). And I've never used this tool before too. But I've heard that you can modify your pbo settings in a way that you still get good performance but lower noise + better temps, is this correct? If so, I want to know the best pbo settings and what factors can cause it to differ from many other settings people use?

Cooling Specs:

5800x

noctua u12s redux (1fan)

Phanteks p400a + 2 preinstalled fans (1 in front and 1 in back)

PBO Enabled + 200mhz.

Memory frequency at 3600mhz or faster.

What values are those again? Just got into the settings

I assume those first 3 values are ppt, tdc, edc? Not sure about the others

Yup PPT TDC and EDC. It won’t put out those numbers even under the hardest of loads, but it will get your cpu to boost in all aspects. You can run something heavy like Linpack Xtreme and take note what it’s max values are. And from there you can go back into your bios and enter your new values and check to see if you can get the same clocks out of it.

How about those other values? What do they represent?

The curve optimizer. You can go in and set a negative 25 curve across all cores. Of course later you can go back and do a per core optimization but it’s not something I did with that cpu.

how about that 200+?

And I assume the per core optimization shouldn't really needed to be touched for my needs?

And what should I be looking out for if the settings don't work or make things worst?

It should be there too, but I don’t have a gigabyte board so not sure where that would be, other than the advanced amd overclocking menu in the back.

I don’t use Ryzen Master, just the bios.

Sorry I meant what is the name of the option that you told me to increase it 200+.

edit: Oh it seems that its possible you forgot where that option was, I'll try to find it in my msi bios

Also quick question, I assume the settings you gave me shouldn't require any further tweaking (though it may be suggested to do so) and should get me same performance but cooler/quieter system?

Shoot if that was stable i'd be surprised. Only in my dreams is my 5800x stable in all scenarios with a flat -25 all core and +200 lol

@freeagentknows what they're talking about but sheesh they're making it sounds much easier than it really is.

I definitely didn't spend most of an afternoon into the evening running Corecycler to tune each core 😄

is that +200 the cpu boost optionbtw?

@freeagentNever bothered with a stress tester in a while, for the one you recommended, it's ok to just start the test with the default settings right? I heard that for some testers, you need to tweak some settings.

Update, seems like the settings have noticeably reduced my cpu temps and fan noise during uasge that would cause otherwise. Though it seems like my performance has also increased << Might be a placebo affect

Yep, that's the beauty of the Curve Optimizer. Lower voltages, less heat, higher clockspeeds. Though, how did you test this?

The settings I gave are what I used to run my 5900X at lol 🙂

Now I run it at 235/160/190.

They are also what I am running my 5600X at right now because I misplaced the piece of paper I wrote my settings down on lol.. but it’s is core cycler stable at +150 for 4800MHz.   I don’t have the mems clocked at all as it is the kids system, and the wife plays with it too. My system seems to be the red headed step child in my family’s eyes. Not by me though, I built it to be a beast.. it’s almost done. Might get a 5900X3D we shall see.

Edit:

I just about impulse bought a 5950X.. ugh.

Strange issue I'm having now. I switched back to the default PBO settings in bios for testing in games and then I switched it back using your settings again. Now I'm dealing with BSODs and/or system restarting when going into windows. Switched it back to default pbo settings, and everything is now fine.

I think that's a sign that I should fk off from the pbo settings at this point. Don't fix what's not broken.

Yeah, there is a little learning curve. I've tinkered with tuning CO on and off since I got this chip at launch.

For a complete write-up, I find this one pretty comprehensive. (I don't use OCCT, I far prefer CoreCycler)

Yeah I could go on with tweaking it but don't want to fk up my OS with the restarts that occur. Pretty sure I can just tell the system via bios to not load it into windows

*shrugs* No restarts here, cores just fail and it moves to the next one.

But this is overclocking, some find it fun, others don't. No big deal.

Yeah it's not like my system is overheating or throttling, just wanted to reduce the noise and temps. But not the end of the world.
