Is RAM limiting my gaming?

Hey everyone.

I currently have one 16gb stick of RAM in my PC. I believe that’s more than you usually need for good gaming performance, but I was wondering if the fact that Its single channel could contribute to lag spikes and fps dips regardless of the memory size.

Thanks in advance!

Yes.

So adding another stick would most likely increase fps?

Not necessarily, but it will give you better performance overall. Using 2 sticks of RAM of the same speed and capacity and using the right RAM slots on your board will enable dual channel.

Get the same brand/model of RAM if you're gonna consider adding another stick.

Yes. But a matching stick.

There’s a matching stick for sale on EBay right now, but I’m not sure if it would have deteriorated over time, or if the batch numbers need to be the same?

In any case, yes.

What CPU do you have? Ryzen sees more of a benefit to this than Intel does, but single-channel RAM isn't ideal in 2022 regardless of CPU.

bang bang go the dropping frames, man

wipe all the Macs that don't agree

max out the settings at 4K now

Ok. Yeah, a second stick is always a good idea.

My PC is a bit on the older side, and I can’t find the matching RAM new.

A matching stick is only a matching stick when it's from the same batch and sold as a kit of 2 with the original stick. All other combinations is a hit or mis.
