Can't get HDR enabled in Windows on my new Samsung 4k TV

MrWizzle

Hi all. I recently upgraded from an older Samsung 4k TV where I had no problems with HDR. Bought the new Samsung QN65. However now I can't toggle HDR on in Windows- it acts like it's a non HDR output. What can I do? It works perfectly fine on PS5 games, but when playing PC games no dice. Any help is appreciated!

I picked up a new HDMI 2.1 cord and should have it tomorrow. But it's in native 4K120 with no issues other than the non-HDR. Made sure that the TV is set with the HDR as well. I tried editing the registry to force it but that didn't work.

Try turn on HDMI Deep Color at TV and also choose RGB color at Windows.

I don't see that option on my TV.

But I got a new HDMI cord and I can use HDR- just not at 120hz. It's either 4K60 HDR or 4K120 standard. Oh well.

Found the issue. HDR at 4k120 isn't available for GTX10 series (I have 1080).

That's because you don't have hdmi 2.1, only hdmi 2.0

To add, you should be able to use a  DP to HDMI cable or adapter and get 4k 120 with HDR, I use one with a 2080 and it works well, just don't exprect many games to run at 4k120. That is a stretch for a 2080 let alone a 1080.

I didn't even think of an adapter! So, something like this will give me the ability to run 4k120 with HDR? Do you have an adapter recommendation?

Be careful, adapters are a whole other rabbit hole. There are some that support 4K 120Hz but not HDR, others support HDR but not 4K 120Hz, etc... In any case DP 1.4 doesn't even have enough bandwidth to cover 4K 120Hz 10bit HDR, so you'll have to sacrafice something either way when going with DisplayPort.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Are you sure about that? I am currently using 4k/120 10 bit HDR over type-c DP.

Idk how that is possible, as DP only goes up to 26Gbps and 4K 120Hz 10bit RGB needs over 32Gbps of bandwidth.

Possibly because you're running on limited range, but other than that idk.

Should be possible with DSC tech where DP 1.4 support and RTX card if not wrong all support DSC (Display Stream Compression).

For DSC to work both the display and the GPU need to support it. Other than the newest high-end TV models i don't know of any other TV that has DSC.

Well my TV is a 2022 model... Dsc is working fine.

And thanks for pointing out that I was on limited, fixed that now. Running full.

Ok so it seems your TV supports DSC. But i don't think the QN65 does.

I think most newer TV in year 2021 onwards support DSC especially if the TV is 120hz.

Granted they only wanted display on this machine as it was a conference room computer.  Just spent a few hours trying to get a HDMI to usbc adapter working on a new TV.  It was the same cable that was working on the old TV.  Asked them to just get a DP-HDMI cable and it worked fine. I wish the computer had HDMI but it was just DP and usbc.

Anyway I have better luck with specific use cables vs using adapters (or anything usb).

I just read through the listing, they mention multiple times that the 1080 doesn't support dsc. I think you are screwed no matter what cable you use. Your gpu can't do 4k 120 and hdr. Only 4k 60 and hdr.

You're right. Ugh. I'd have to downgrade my card to a 16xx series to get that, which obviously I wouldn't be able to run 4k120 anyway 🙁. Guess I'll have to wait until I can build a new computer as the mobo I currently have is too old to run 30xx series cards and buying a used 20xx card would be a bit of a waste of money. Thank you for all the help!!

I'm not sure what you mean by too old to run a 30xx series card it will run pretty much full speed with PCIe 3.0 and maybe 10-15% loss at PCIe 2.0 even.  There are lots of 3000 series fire sales right now too.

EDIT: I have a cheap 3060 I got a hold of running PCIe 3.0x16.  It is a newer MB but the CPU is a 5600g.

You're right- I had gotten confused! The issue isn't GPU it's CPU. I currently have a 7600K which isn't good enough anymore given the core count it has. I had previously wanted to upgrade but my board is LGA 1151 version 1- so while I can get a 3000 series, it would be bottlenecked and wasted by the older CPU since I can't plop any newer CPU's in that require the version 2 socket, so the best I was told was 2070ish to pair with the board.
