Dream Has Too Much Money (SPONSORED)

LTT fans should be big enough to actually have some principles that matter to them beyond just drooling over gadgets.

That's cute. We only have any say when it has the potential to loose LMG more money later on. (R:SL could have lost them a lot of ad revenue if they kept going with those ads)

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

I'd be amazed if those SSD's fail at all.

Seems like overkill for this case. We use high write life stuff SSds for caching servers and they only last ~8-14 months before hitting EOL though so I would not be too surprised to see cases where these drives only last a year.

What sort of workload is burning through enterprise drives in a year?  Doing some quick math, it's not possible to burn an 3 DWPD SSD that fast with random reads and sequential cache probably wouldn't be getting written to the SSD that often or else it defeats the point of it being a cache.

i'm just dumb just looked and these were just microns nothing fancy. The workload is website caching so files are 100k-few mb and it ends up in a lot of cases being "in cache? no request page and cache. " then it expires. Really only kicks in as useful under attacks or heavy load to a site. So mostly Write once never read again.

We also were replacing on "Percent Life Remaining" but then went 8 months with no drives so some just sat at 0% life remaining but reserve NAND blocks never went down and there were never any other errors.

My memory may also be faulty because looking over history, they used to just replace a single drive at a time but then switch to replacing both in pairs so even if one was still good and plenty of life both got swapped. So 8 months is probably not accurate but I do see looking on a few servers they got  swapped once a year or so.

TBH I like the new system they are doing where they just stuff the servers full of ram and use that instead. More cycling of data since its not as much space but faster and no dealing with downtime since these are m.2 screwed into the server motherboard.

After seeing that LTT did a collab with Hasanabi, that a lot of more people hated and they even joked about it.

I don't expect Linus to care about dream drama, the money that the collab bought to him is more important than his personal ethics.

The only way to fix it would be to people to downvote the video itself as it brings more harm to the channel in the long run than complaining with him

nah this isn't it

its not gatekeeping when its dream who has genuinely caused loss of life by directing his fans like a horde of zombies to go attack people (e.g. Apollo Legend)

I would like to see the specific actions that he took to "direct" his fans. From what I have seen he continually is trying to get the toxic people to stop and doesn't want them in his community.

Also I looked up the Apollo thing and it sounds like blaming Dream for that is a huge stretch.

I don't know who Dream is and good thing I don't give a shit.

People are concerned about Linus associating himself with an individual who has engaged in a significant amount of morably reprehensive actions, and you think bragging about your ignorance of all this zoomer drama is the right approach to take?

By all means discuss the super cool technology being showcased on the video, but I hope you understand that it would probably be best to leave this sense of superiority at the door.

I doubt Linus and whoever else arranged this didn't know it would be massively unpopular with LTT viewers (if they didn't they should be reassigned). But is it unpopular enough that it'll cause more people to unsubscribe than will potentially sub from Dream's much larger audience? No. LTT's line will go up.

Linus for sure knew, he obviously didn't care. He choose money over principles, if that's gonna be his choice, then that's fair, he just can't take the moral highground on these issues, when he behaves like this.

Yup, that's the exact approach to take.  There's enough legitimate things to be angry about in the world that some minor youtwit drama doesn't even move the needle.

Several posts in the thread make it clear people's issues with Dream go well beyond the cheating thing.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

But ya, seems like a business decision, dream has 30m subs, say LTT loses 1% and gain 1% of Dream's, that's -150k and +300k

No idea who Dream is. I searched him on youtube and apparently it's a really popular minecraft channel. What's the drama with him? I legit never heard of it.

I was also today years old when I also discovered in this thread that LTT apparently did a collab with PewDiePie and that PewDiePie is also bad for some reason (no idea why, I love watching the guy's videos when I'm high or hungover).

The petabyte server was awesome though and the LTT video was fun to watch as usual. ❤️

Linus has said on WAN show that their subscriber growth is struggling and that most video clicks are from the recommanded section. This is an attempt to hook into the dream fanbase, and they most likely want the video go 'viral'.

Being annoyed at it isn't going to change anything, just like with the clickbait thumbnails. LTT is a business - they want to grow.

Sorry, I thought this thread was about building storage servers for someone, not a discussion of the person.

I thought this was Linus Tech Tips, not Linux YouTube Drama.
