Ayn has announced a SteamDeck competitor with multiple models where the cheapest one starts at US$ 299.

The cheapest model is called the Loki Mini and uses an Intel Alder Lake U CPU. The regular Loki model will feature an AMD Ryzen 5 6600U with 6 RDNA GPU Cores from $499 and will be available with 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB of Storage.

The most expensive model Ayn announced is called the Loki Max which features an AMD Ryzen 7 6800U with 512GB of Storage for $799.

The amount of RAM in each model hasn't been disclosed.

Another differentiator compared to SteamDeck is all of the Loki models will run Windows.

Ayn, the maker of the Odin Android handheld, is releasing a lineup of what it calls the “most affordable” portable Windows gaming consoles yet (via Liliputing). The cheapest of the bunch starts at just $299 — $100 less than the 64GB Steam Deck.

Ayn announced the news in a YouTube video and a series of posts on Instagram, giving us a look at what we can expect for looks, tech specs, and pricing. While the entry-level $299 Loki Mini comes with 64GB of storage and an Intel Alder Lake U chip, the standard Loki handheld has an AMD Ryzen 5 6600U chip with three different storage options: 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB, each costing $499, $599, and $699, respectively. The $799 Loki Max features an upgraded AMD Ryzen 7 6800U chip and 512GB of storage.

My thoughts

Not gonna lie I think choosing to preinstall the device with Windows instead of SteamOS is a very bold move - One which will either come to be a major turn off or a major selling point of this device. I'm not personally cancelling my SteamDeck reservation and I doubt many people will. I feel like this is for the people who missed the boat on the SteamDeck reservation tho I'd still probably recommend a SteamDeck over this.

Sure the top of the line is more powerful but the steam deck has so many quality of life improvements both software and. Hardware wise. I don't think I can go back from the 40hz mode and the touchpads built into the device. Also let's not forget the repairability I've already opened my deck and upgraded the SSD to 1tb I probably wouldn't do that on the Ayn or any other manufacturers device due to lack of available parts of something breaks.

to be fair, steamdeck is more interesting all around, but same as analogue pocket, playdate, ps5, xbox s/x, you cannot beat availability.

If you can buy one of these freely and get it in less than a month then it's 100% better than steamdeck.

Why would anyone buy this over a Nintendo Switch. At least the Steamdeck has Valve backing it and a store that can be coerced into making games available. All these third party gameboy/DS/Switch clones, at worst are aimed at pirates, and at best people who haven't the slightest idea how poor iGPU performance is.

Nintendo "wins" in this market for handhelds because the games are designed to use that hardware. Third parties basically have to shoe-horn support through either an emulation layer (eg Proton/WINE) or have to install hacky things to get controller/touch to work on a game that has neither.

announced, if they can show when they are releasing.

also it would be cool when steam OS is better adjusted for other systems, as they recently added fan controls etc. Some that one might be able to use now on other devices. Steam library kind of suck still, but very fun to see where they are able to take steam OS. Also how steam OS is still a bit dedicated to the current specs/build of the steamdeck.

steam saying, 40hz is better than 30hz in their recent update. (steam OS 3.2)

Quote

Pro-tip, we have found that 40Hz tends to be a sweet spot for responsiveness, consistency, and smoothness. So a rock solid 40fps in game, with a 40hz updating screen, means every frame is a new frame and as a result it can feel smoother than an inconsistent framerate with a higher screen refresh

And of course, you can save this setting on a per-game basis.

Remote Play Together added, Fan Behavior, Players now have the option to adjust the in-game screen refresh rate on the fly.

Buy -> Install Steam OS -> Profit

But whether it will run as well as the Steam Deck is still questionable. One thing is clear tho: Windows sucks for devices with displays smaller than 10". Unless... Has anyone tried installing Windows 8 on one of these devices yet? 😄

Since they use intel chips, wonder if they have thunderbolt? Ability to use an external gpu would be a good selling point against steam deck.

Not unless the port is a USB4 port or unless Intel's Thunderbolt licensing fees have gptten significantly cheaper over the years. For $299 I seriously doubt it'd have Thunderbolt.

You're not going to attach a $900 eGPU to a $300 toy. It absolutely isn't going to have that support.

These iGPU-only devices are only going to be playing 10+ year old games. CS:GO requires at least a 15 year old CPU/GPU (a dual core with 2GB of ram.) At presumably minimum quality settings. You're not playing Forza 5 on it (a quad core with 8GB of ram and a GTX 970.) You're not playing Halo either, which has requirements just under Forza 5's.

The most expensive models with the RDNA iGPU's ( AMD Radeon 660M (60% below entry level GTX 1050) or AND Radeon 680M (close to a RTX 3050)) are pretty much a joke with the latter being equal to the Steamdeck, at best.

At that point you may as well buy the steamdeck at the lower price.

don't even know why you would want to, the whole point of these devices is to be portable, not sure how you do that with an eGPU. who is going to sit at a desk and play games on this? might as well just have a laptop.

That's what I keep saying. If you are going to to use an eGPU, you've already defeated the purpose of a portable device.

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/an-enthusiast-added-an-external-gpu-to-the-steam-deck

Like, cool hack, but completely useless, when you nerf the capability by 75%.

At any rate, GamePark and other Chinese and Korean "primarily piracy devices" have been made for years, they have all been completely pointless hardware except to play pirated console games on, because they are unusable as a laptop, and are impractical to play pc games on that are designed for a keyboard and mouse. The only games you can play on these things are those that are designed for the controller, and even then, why the ever hell would you want to do that on a tiny screen.

I'd say the GBA/DS/3DS had a specific target market that pixel-art games worked with, but anything "3D" really requires at least 10" screen, and at that point it's too heavy to be a "Controller" device, it has to be a tablet, or better yet, a laptop. It still baffles me that Nintendo didn't realize the Switch is too heavy for children to use, let alone adults. Your hands and arms will get tired if you use it as a handheld. It works for a 1 hour commute 4 times a week, not a 4 hour gaming session every day. People I know who stream the Switch are all using the Pro controller.

Also this is one of the reasons I feel the PSP was such a market failure in the end. It should never have existed in the form Sony made it. It should have had removable "SD Card"'s used in the way they were intended to be used, and each subsequent model should have the previous unit's slot on it for backwards compatibility (something the DS did) allowing you to migrate games from the old card to the new card. Sony should have been first to market with an "iPad with dual shock controllers", and yet. Nope, that's not what happened.

The smartphone market probably killed any chance for Sony to remain in the market with an expensive device nobody was excited for. Unfortunately with the way mobile games have been going, it's hard to stay interested in any mobile hardware when the software all wants subscriptions or micro-transaction hell to play.

No I think the steam deck is superior, I was moreso looking at this from a steam deck competitor standpoint. Even if its not as powerful, I could probably get my hands on one sooner.

Admittedly I didn't look too deeply at the specs. My bad. But if I think some of the older halo games should be able to run (anything older than 3 through MCC maybe)? CSGO is another game that should work and isnt available on switch.

People use their switches in docked mode right? What if I want to have one device I can play portable at 720p but also use it to play on a higher res TV when I get the chance?

People seem to either use their Switches 100% docked or 100% handheld. I don't know if I've met a person who actually switches back and forth regularly. At our house it's in the dock pretty much permanently.

It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Ive looked up win8... i dont really see the difference,  it just looks a bit more messy than 10, but "touch" functionality wise it should be pretty much the same?

the problem is all the promo shots showing "live tiles" which just looks messy imo.

But! Apparently you can do that in 10 too!

Is this the first time you've ever seen Windows 8?

The entire point of its tile-centric interface was to be more conducive to use on smaller touchscreen devices. (Also, your screenshot there is not the original Win8, because it eliminated the Start menu entirely.)

Since Windows tablets never gained traction and the overwhelming majority of users were still on desktops and laptops with mice and touchpads, the response was grim. Many people like myself skipped 8/8.1 and went 7->10.

Also, your screenshot there is not the original Win8, because it eliminated the Start menu entirely.

no this is 10! which was my point   they didn't really change the "touch" design at all.

because it eliminated the Start menu entirely.

thats why people didn't like it?

to me that's a god sent i never use it outside the tiles,  and right click, but i guess you could still do that in 8 (to get to taskmanager etc?)

... actually Im confused about this statement,  this *is* the startmenu, it even says "start".... (i named it "play", it doesn't really need a name at all, but "main menu" would be better actually)

ps: oh and i use it to shut down restart etc... but only because I don't know any other way lol... its tedious... shutdown should be placed somewhere else imo...

So again for comparison

Spoiler

win 10

its not a big difference at all??

(i hope 8 had a taskbar, cause that would be a *big* difference o.o)

and went 7->10.

ironically i didn't go 7 for the same reasons people didn't like 8... change! It literally wasnt Vista so it probably sucked. : p

btw i liked XP too, but Vista basically was just an improved XP, they didn't really change how the menus etc worked much iirc.

Ive looked up win8... i dont really see the difference,  it just looks a bit more messy than 10, but "touch" functionality wise it should be pretty much the same?

There's more going on that just a touch optimized start menu in Windows 8.
