How to tell if your ISP is throttling your internet?

Good morning guys as the title says I wanted to know if there was a way to get a definitive proof that my ISP is throttling my service.

 

Currently I'm using Verizon for both wireless and gigabit internet at home and I was using my own router for WIFI and LAN. However, I noticed in a speed test I'm not getting my full gigabit all the time as promised. So I contact Verizon and they tell me I'm supposed to use their own router instead of my Asus ACS2900 Dual band Gigabit router, so I say sure why not I'll try the router see if it improves and immediately I regretted it.

 

Ever since changing to the Verizon router  I have been getting slower content loading on YouTube to a point where its struggling to play 1080p videos without stopping for 15 seconds at a time. In games I still have these huge stutters where BF2042 would freeze in a rubber banding fashion and return my character which didn't go any where and end up dying. Playing Tekken 7 I get character freezes without the graphics being frozen (I know this because the capes and what not still flow while the characters stand still) and similar problems playing online games.

 

Now I got suspicious of Verizon throttling service because I noticed my phone service would also throttle my YouTube experience by capping my streaming quality to 720p. Anything over 720P would end up being stop and go even though I have 5G phone with supposedly 5G service. So whenever I am with a customer representative or agent trying to figure out this problem I keep mentioning if they are throttling my service and they say no, it could be YouTube itself(I was using YouTube at the time to tell them that my videos were a stop and go at 1080P). However, when I have a VPN on all these problems go away and my YouTube viewing experience is just like when I had my old router.

 

TLDR

So the TLDR version is, I think Verizon is Throttling my internet, how do I prove this?

Use youtube-dl to download some video off YouTube, and compare speeds. yt-dl downloads directly off YouTube so if the connection is throttled, you should be able to tell. Try something in 4k or a live stream (preferably of something outdoors so there's lots of movement == higher bitrate == bigger file size)

First step: make sure it's actually the internet and not your WiFi that is slow. Speedtests need to be performed on wired LAN, or you'll most likely measure the speed of your WiFi, not the speed of the internet. 

Second step: read the fineprint again, does Verizon guarantee gigabit internet, or "up to gigabit"? 

Third step: use a consistent speedtest like fast.com so your results aren't skewed by server side problems, YT servers may not be configured for gigabit streaming because those speeds aren't required for video streams.

I am connected directly to the router via ethernet cable but I will see the fine print again because you might be right that it is promising up to gigabit. ill also try the fast.com speed test as well. Verizon keeps telling me to use their speed test site but I should really use someone else.

I feel the same way about the Verizon router. I didn't buy it out right though i just rented it so I am going to return it if I don't see more improvements soon.

Either use fast.com as it is hosted on Netflix so it will be throttled. Or what I do is right click on a video and check the connection speed/health then turn a VPN on and reload the page. For example if you are being throttled on a 10Mb/s connection you will see the speed without a VPN be around 1.2-2.2Mb/s but with a VPN speeds are closer to 8.9-9.4Mb/s

Bit of a update on the situation

 

I've tried both of your suggestions and here are the results

I tried downloading and streaming a 4k quality video and they both got stuck at like 1% and it was an immediate stop and go.

Than I turned on my VPN and set it to Washington DC because I live in Northern Virginia and there was no interruption even at 4K quality video

The service also say up to 980 download and 840 upload so there's that 

finally I did the speed test from Fast.com It showed that I get wildly inconsistent speeds. Some times I would get a low as 300mps and high as 880 mbps speed. The latency always lingered around 3 to 5 MS for both unloaded and loaded side. 

I also tried the speed test with the VPN on and I get like 120 Mbps and 100 ms on both uloaded and loaded yet somehow I get no interruption on my 4k videos.

That sounds like either your ISP is throttling YT or they have a peering problem and not enough bandwidth is available from Verizon datacenter to YT datacenter. If everything is fast except youtube, and youtube is fast when using a VPN, then it's not your internet connection, but the connection from your ISP to youtube that is slow.

If it makes you feel any better boss I've been having the same issue in the same area. I've been using their router for almost two years now with no issues. But suddenly last night youtube just refused to buffer anything beyond 360p. Twitch was fine, games and speed tests were fine, just youtube. Did some looking today and my download would go from 1k kbps to 110kbps. Likewise I turned on a VPN in DC and then boom shot back up to 36k kbps and buffering no where to be seen.

 

TLDR, I don't think it's your router thats the problem. Pretty sure FiOS is throttling NoVA from Youtube for some reason.

well the funny thing is I just swapped my router out again with my old one which was the ASUS acs2900 and YouTube plays just fine even in 4k so I am in some what of a belief that it was the Verizon router. I would highly suggest you get a different router than the shitty Verizon one
