PC Not booting, stuck in a loop?

count_zero99uk

Hi, I hope someone can help.  Whilst playing on my pc it powered off.  There were no bangs pops crackles or anything.  I thought we might have had a micro power cut. When i powerd the pc back on the rgb lit up then it just seemed to start to cycle as if trying to turn on but failing.

The pc is

MSI Mag X570 Tomahawk Wifi

AMD Ryzen 7 5800x

32gb Tean Group xtreem rgb (2 sets of 2x8gb sticks)

MSI Geforce RTX3060 gaming X Trio 12gb

Samsung 980 pro 1tb nvme

corsair rn750x psu.

The motherboard has EZ Debug LEDs which repeat the same cycle

CPU, VGA + Boot, VGA, Boot

This cycles round.

I swaped the gpu out for my old gtx1070 to see if the gpu had gone.

The same lights flashed up on the ezdebug.  However the mobos flash screen appeared on the monitor then it started the cycle again.

Im looking for suggestions on what has happened and how i can trouble shoot it, i have spare components from my previous machine but would like to know where to start or if someone reading this can go "ah its the such and such that is wrong do this" rather than swaping everything around.

Many thanks for your help

Brian

Try these in this order.

  • Clear CMOS
  • Remove all devices not required for POST (HDDs, SSDs, Disc Drives, mouse, keyboard, other USB devices, etc)
  • Remove all but one stick of RAM, try it in every slot, try every other stick in every slot.
  • Try a different PSU.

I reset CMOS, booted to post where it said things had changed i told it to go to setup went into bios everything looked ok without changing everything.  Closed bios no changes.  Looped start up started again.

Removed all but 1 memory stick.  And all but the boot drive the nvme listed above.  it came up saying that cmos had been reset again, so this time i chose for it to have default settings. and bios opened.  I checked and that seemed ok, closed bios and it booted back to bios.

It seems that it didnt have the nvme drive as the first bootable, sorted that and it just does the same loop.

So next thing to check is the psu?

Can they break in a way that they work but dont put out enough power to run the full pc?

Thanks for your help again.  Really dont like pulling this thing apart. 😞

It sounds like your boot drive is defective.

@Hairless Monkey Boy

I ran some kind of ssd self test in bios which said it was fine.  But I suppose that could just be physically and not if the data is corrupt. I'll see what happens if I stick the win 10 USB drive in, see if it wants to boot.  Going to look tomorrow had enough of it today.

I'll let you know what happens next

make sure your boot drive is properly selected. I had this happen with my laptop where it kept going in a boot loop because somehow it changed my boot drive from C to D drive and couldnt' find windows.

Also how far in the boot process are you getting?  Have you tried getting in safe mode?

Not even getting that far.  Thanks.  Will double check bios for boot options.

Hello, @Hairless Monkey Boy

Right after removing the mobo and everything from the case i thought i would check what happened if i tried booting without the nvme drive in....

why i didnt try this before i honestly have no correct answer, ask for help and only follow part of the suggestions.... well human nature i suppose.

So no drive in went to bios.  Put a blank ssd hdd in and it told me to select a correct bootable drive.

So looks like it was the drive that is broken.

Now some other questions, i have files on c that i dont have anywhere else (i know they should have been backed up).  Is there a chance once i have it booting again ill be access the drive in windows?  After that is done will i be able to just format the drive and install windows back on it?

I know its hard to answer these questions, but your opinons will help me out.  Ill be able to just fit it all together now install windows on a 250gb drive then try and salvage whats on the drive then reformat it.  Or buy a new drive.

Thanks again for all your help in this matter.

Brian.

This could just be an issue with the way that you installed Windows the first time. UEFI vs Legacy, and with potentially problematic CSM settings. Resetting the BIOS to optimized defaults, and ensuring that you boot into the Windows Installation Media in UEFI mode would correct this if it was the issue. And also you should be able to collect the data you need to keep from the drive by doing exactly what you plan to do, namely:

If the NVME drive shows up correctly with Windows installed on the 250GB drive, and you are able to get your data off of it, then go ahead and try reinstalling Windows on it.

A couple notes:

You may have issues with permissions and getting the data you need off of the NVME. Let me know if you do.

The best practice for installing Windows is as follows. Have only one drive installed in the system, the one you intend to install Windows on to. Boot from the Windows installer USB in UEFI mode. Choose a custom install when given the option. Delete all existing partitions on the drive and select the "unallocated space" for the Windows install. The installer will create all of the partitions it needs from there. Once you have Windows installed and booting to the desktop, you can power it down and reconnect all of your other drives.

Right im not sure whats going wrong now, i have made a fresh usb win 10 installer and it didnt start, that was with using the official win 10 media creator. It went into the boot loop again.

Did a little bit of digging and found a program called Rufus, made another installer with that, still no joy. Ive tried various usb ports.

Im at a loss of what to do now.

Im trying to install it to a standard sata ssd.  It is seen in bios, which i can get into if i dont have any bootable thing in.

Again thanks for your help in this.

I'm not clear on when it is boot looping. Did you fresh install Windows and now it is boot looping, or you can't even get the USB to boot?

I assume you mean the latter.

So, after creating the Windows installation USB with the standard tool (not rufus), insert it into a rear USB port. Repeatedly press the "F11" key as you boot the system. This will bring you to the boot menu. Select the USB drive and be sure to choose the UEFI option if it is an option.

@Hairless Monkey Boy

I made a bootable windows 10 usb stick with the standard windows tool.

I plugged this into a rear usb port.

i turned the machine on.

After F11 i picked that usb stick to boot from it said partition 1 uefi and that was the only option.

The install screen for win 10 came up but i noticed that i hadnt plugged my sata ssd in.  So powered down, pluged that in, repeated the F11 think selected the USB drive again and it did not bring up the win10 installer. Nothing appeared on screen appart from the display from the mobo where you can hit del etc, but it dosnt stay long.

It again went into a loop where lights on  EZ Debug LEDs which repeat the same cycle

CPU, VGA + Boot, VGA, Boot

This cycles round.

This is exactly what was happening with the nvme drive.

Checking bios, hitting del gets in if your quick, it sees the drive.

Could somethign have happend to the bios?  Is it worth updating to the latest version?

What other issues could it be?  Is there some setting in Bios im missing?

As allways totaly appreciate your help in this.

Brian

In the BIOS, under settings, Advanced, Windows OS Configuration, try settings the BIOS UEFI/CSM Mode setting to UEFI if it isn;t already.

In the BIOS, under settings, Advanced, Windows OS Configuration, try settings the BIOS UEFI/CSM Mode setting to UEFI if it isn;t already.

it is.  It sees the usb stick i got all excited when the screens for picking language turned up, just didnt have the sata drive connected.  When its connected it dosnt seem to allow the usb to load, even when picking that from the F11 menu

I'm at a loss. Only thing that comes to mind right now is whether the storage device mode is set to IDE, AHCI, or RAID. Should be AHCI.

Otherwise there could be an issue with the mobo. Try more different drives as the solitary one plugged in.

It could be worth updating or just re-flashing the BIOS.

@Hairless Monkey Boy

Well i tried the chip in another board and got exatly the same result.  Tried a known working chip and it worked perfectly.  So looks like the chip has gone.  Looks like im going to have to send this off somewhere.  Ill contact my supplier.

Going to check thw working chip in the other board just to make sure that works fine.

Wonder what exactly happened.

Anyway thanks again, due to health issues things like this are really dificult for me to sort out and your help made it manageable, your help was invaluable.

Kind Regards

Brian.
