Framework Laptop, mainboard upgrades announced!

It would appear Framework are soon to deliver on their upgradeability promise!

Announced today, Frameworks with Intel 12th gen mainboards are available for pre-order in all regions where the 11th gen laptop is for sale, due to ship in July.

In addition, individual 12th gen mainboards, and upgrade kits that include the mainboard and an improved top cover lid, are now listed on Framework marketplace as "Coming Soon".

Of course nothing is certain until delivery, but it's still encouraging!

At those prices you may as well just buy an entire new laptop.

Framework wants $1,138 for the i7-1280p upgrade kit.

Meanwhile… you can find an entire new laptop with the same chip for $1,276. Maybe less, I haven’t really looked around much:

The MSI Evo 14 laptop with a 1280P isn't $1300usd, and thats from a 3rd party seller on newegg. I can't find a 1280P version but the 1260P version is $1700usd.

And I find it interesting the 11th gen CPU version of the MSI Summit E14 has soldered in RAM, so I can guess the 12th gen version of the laptop has soldered in ram as well.

Also you're missing the point with the Framework, the whole point is you don't have to throw away your laptop to get an upgrade, and the 1280P isn't necessary either in my opinion.

News articles are coming out on the topic:

Framework was able to keep upgradability up for two generations now, it's promising. When sales open up in my region, I'm going to buy one. Perhaps I'll wait for 13th gen and DDR5 parts. Hopefully 13th gen will also have better integrated graphics.

There it is for $1600 CAD which comes out to $1250 USD. Tray cost is like $480... There will be plenty of notebooks at that price point once availability is widespread.

Framework has no business charging as much as an entire notebook to upgrade your processor.

I think the most obvious question is why don't we have an AMD version yet.

8 months ago @LinusTech buys in and we still don't have an AMD version considering all the advantages AMD have over Intel in the mobile space.

I was excited about have a repairable and up gradable laptop.   Still a non-starter if I can not buy an AMD version.  Intel's $/performance in the laptop space is still well behind AMD not to mention the embarrassing upgrade price to swap the CPU.

I continue to be unimpressed and disappointed by the product Framework is putting out.

Framework explained in an old blog post that the reason they don't sell the DIY edition as a complete knockdown kit is that laptop parts have much higher import tariff's than assembled laptops, which would have pushed the price way up. That will likely be part of the reason why the mainboard prices are high relative to the cost of a whole laptop:

https://community.frame.work/t/the-evolution-of-the-framework-laptop-diy-edition/2186

In terms of high relative cost for a Framework vs. other brands, I suspect them still being new is a part of it - established brands shipping many times more units will have economies of scale that Framework can't reach yet.

In the last WAN show, Linus speculates that the lack of AMD mainboards might be due to AMD not having enough chips to fulfil orders, and thinks that Steam Deck silicon should be their priority anyway:

Framework has reasons for being more expensive than other brands, as already mentioned, other brands are able to have larger economies of scale, stocking more parts and getting parts cheaper from suppliers, in addition to likely being less impacted by shortages and shipping prices.

The Framework would cheaper if you keep the laptop instead of upgrading every year, the 1260P upgrade kit makes a lot more sense than a 1280P in a 13.5" notebook, as the 1280P is rated for 60W turbo.

Also IMO the MSI laptop is a just a bad design and obvious planned obsolescence using soldered in RAM, the HP Envy 15 X360 with a Ryzen 7 5700U, a midrange laptop is able to fit in 2 DIMM slots.
