1080 Ti with an i7-8700

kylemarshmallow

I currently have an i7-8700 with 2666 mhz ram and 2 Evga SSC 970's in SLI. I was wondering if my cpu would be a bottleneck if I were to get a 1080 Ti

The 8700 has no issue pushin a 1080ti to it's limits. How much are you getting it for? New gpu's are coming down so I'm asking to make sure you are actually getting a good deal.

Bottleneck is a very misunderstood word. There are bottlenecks in every system under any scenario. 1080ti paired with a 8700 is just a fine combo, better than your 970 SLI setup for sure. I would take 1080ti over a 970 SLI setup all day long.

The memory speed could be an issue (worsened if only single channel) in some games and settings, but otherwise it should work well.

The 1080 ti would offer a pretty big performance boost over your current setup, if you're getting it for a good price I recommend it.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Bottleneck or not bottleneck, I would like to buy 1080 Ti anyway. Because you get more performance than 970 SLI.

I don't know, it could be fun to fiddle with a GTX 970 SLI setup. So 1080 Ti all day, sure, but 970 SLI in the evening.

At the time the 8700 was released, it was the most powerful CPU for gaming (except for its sibling 8700k).

At that time, the 1080 ti was the most powerful GPU (second fastest if you count the Titan X Pascal).

So people at the end of 2017 were building high-end PC's pairing these two parts and not thinking a thing about any "bottlenecks." Why would one part suddenly bottleneck the other 5 years later?

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Stock for stock, the 8700 and 8700k have almost identical performance as they generally both are all-core 4.3ghz and most boards ignored power limits anyway. The 8700 will have a shorter boost window on boards that do follow the power limits, but that's unlikely to manifest in games.

However, there possibly could be some differences in performance from 2017 vs 2022 in the form of OS/software/firmware security mitigations that have come since then that newer chips can manage with less performance loss.

I can tell you for a fact that my 8700k has become slower by nearly double digits in the same benchmarks since I got it in 2017.

However, that said, it's not going to generally be game breaking nor will it matter that much on a 1080ti in most scenarios.

If you believe the conspiracy theories, the 1080 ti should have been nerfed a bit by Nvidia driver updates to get people to buy new cards, so they should still be a perfect match.

I was looking on Ebay for one which would be around 300-400 dollars. But I don't really want to buy it off of Ebay because I don't want to support scalpers. Where would be the best place to buy at 1080 Ti?

What board do you have? You should be able to run 3200/3600 XMP easily if it's a Z board.

At that point might as well look at a rtx 3060 new.

8700 can't run on Z170 (at least without sketchy BIOS mods)

Ah. Well for your previously stated budget of 300-400, I'd recommend a 6600 or 6600XT for that price range over an old 1080ti.

It's only PCIE4X8, which will be PCIE3x8...but shouldn't be a problem since it has 8gb VRAM.

Performance should be relatively similar vs 1080ti, but the 6600/XT is likely to outperform on newer games and also last much longer both physically and driver-wise.

If it's a Z board, you can try overclocking the memory even if it's just 2666. You can probably get 3000-3200 out of it with a little effort.

At the very least you can remove all CPU power limits and it should perform identically to the 8700k at stock settings.

i used to have a 8700k+1080ti setup, didn't realize the exact bottleneck til i switched, on same games it's up to 25% in lows and the frametimes were just not as smooth.

that said it wouldn not stop me from upgrading the gpu, unless there's a reason you want specifically the 1080ti, i'd look at the 3060ti or the 6700xt

afaik my 1080ti was on its last legs and 2 other people i know had theirs die, it's an old card.
