Will ECC Ram Work in Desktop?

I'm looking to upgrade my ram, and after looking around on ebay I saw a lot of server ram and I was wondering if this would work fine for my setup. I saw on google that sometimes ECC ram can be used with a non ECC setup, but the ECC won't be functional. I have an i7 5930k and the motherboard is an ASUS x99 Deluxe. Will ECC ram work in this setup?

Unregistered/unbuffered ECC RAM will, but registered/buffered ECC RAM will not.

As long as the ECC RAM is unregistered/unbuffered, it should work fine, though you won't be able to use the ECC features as the 5930K has no support for ECC in any way.

To find out whether your RAM is registered/buffered or not, look up the part number - Google should tell you.

Alright, thanks. Looking into most of what I saw on Ebay it's registered, so much for getting cheap ram

Worth pointing out here that the X99 platform supports registered ECC with Xeon processors. Most boards don't officially support it, but I've had it working with 3 different boards no problem.

You can check it using ECC injection, though it depends on CPU/chipset support. The Pro edition of memtest86 includes it. Basically inserts artificial memory errors to confirm it functions properly.

I do not believe it will even POST if its not working.

You can just get a X99 Xeons, they are dirt cheap right now. And you can use ECC reg memory.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

I use an X99 Deluxe II with 64GB of samsung 2400 ECC with a cheap Xeon 1660V3 overclocked. Your 5930k will not work with ECC memory as it's disabled for that chip.

ECC support is fairly flexible on this board but doesn't work with some of the new modules. Look at the QVL on either Asus or Puget PC for this board to give you an idea on what modules / rank combo works.

Great board but you need to put a Xeon V3 in there if you want to overclock or a Xeon V4 if you get a 2xxx chip with more cores vs overclock potential with the unlocked 16xx v3 chips.

Good luck!
