How to play an old LAN game online?

As the title suggests I have an old game (Settlers Heritage of Kings) which has the ability to play wiith others over LAN (Also online, but I believe the servers were shut down, so I believe the only way now is over LAN), so I was wondering how I would set it up so I can play this game with a friend.

I am assuming this possible through setting up a VPN, and having them (or myself) remoting into the others network and playing there, however I am unsure on how to set up a VPN, and what VPN to use.

Is there any other easier method to do this or is this the only way???

Yes, decade and a half ago we would use Hamachi to do exactly that. I am not sure if its still around but it worked just fine for gaming. It was super easy to set up as I was 12 when I was doing that.

It seems its only free up to 5 computer per network. Here is where you can get it.
