i am trying to get rid of as many ways for big tech companies to track me.

and i am trying to find an alternative to a fire TV stick or chrome cast.

i though what about running steam OS (all other controller style OS in have seen are a bit pants looking)

and what better of a tinny PC to run it on then a raspberry PI

has anyone ever tried running steam os on a raspberry PI

or have any ideas for a different home theater OS

Android boxes work pretty well tbh. Pi's are also in shortage right now and there are an abundance of android boxes

Please tag me @RTX 3090 so I can see your reply

LG webOS is now Open Source

don't android boxes have buckets of tracking. i was kinda looking for something without that.

and inst web OS rather limited in its capabilities

Just run Linux on Raspberry Pi if you want to avoid tracking (steam os will track you too )

yes but this is for a home theater type thing and if i wanted to use normal desktop Linux i would just run a cable from my PC. but yes i didn't think about steam tracking me.

if my assumption that you will run Emby for content consumption is correct then running Linux with emby on top of it should be easy to do and media experience should be quite good. You could also use some custom android ROM without google services

does steamOS have a build for the Pi? making linux run on the pi is one thing, making it run well is a whole another game...

I run kodi on my pi4, I use one of these to pick up signals from a universal remote control (wired straight into the pi's gpio), though with built in bluetooth you could easily use an old xbox/ps3-4 controller too.

I never got DRM video working due to a lack of 64bit arm widevine components, but that was a while ago so it may be possible now, or just use a 32bit OS.

I appreciate that you came back to this thread to update us. My gut told me it wouldn't run well, but I also find I should never underestimate a Pi.

What did you end up doing for your ad / tracking free TV box?

to qualify my statement. it didnt run well becuase there isnt a proper iso from steam yet so it is jank. i belive they said recently they were gonna come out with one that should hopefully improve the situation. i kinda gave up because realisitcaly untill i move properly away from windows (witch is getting allot esier with halo infinite and forza now working on linux due to steam deck and adobe deciding i no longer count as a student) there isnt much point.

  1. Download the SteamOS installation
  2. Unzip the SteamOS.zip file to a blank, FAT32-formattedSD Card. Make sure to use an MBR partition.
  3. Put the SD Card in your target machine. Boot your machine.
  4. Make sure you select the UEFI entry, it may look something like "UEFI: Patriot Memory PMAP". If there is no UEFI entry, you may need to enable UEFI support in your BIOS setup.
  5. Selected "Automated install" from the menu.
  6. The rest of the installation is unattended and will install SteamOS.
  7. After installation is complete, the system will reboot and automatically log on and install Steam. At this point an internet connection is required. If you have an internet connection, Steam will automatically install itself. If you do not have an internet connection (for instance, if you need to connect to a WiFi access point) you will get a popup telling you this. Close the popup and you will get the network configuration UI where you can set up your network. Once you are connected to the internet, close this UI and Steam will install itself.
  8. After Steam finishes installing, your system will automatically reboot.
  9. When the backup completes, select "reboot" to boot into your freshly installed SteamOS.  This Might Install Steam OS
