I don't enjoy gaming anymore

c00face

I find myself not enjoying playing video games anymore. It all seems so boring, same ol. I need something fresh, something new, and almost all of these games are just clones of each other.

I got through introduction with Lost Ark before calling it quits.

Starcraft 1, Starcraft 2... Played these games far too long, it's really boring. And I'm tired of people just spamming Protoss the overpowered race.

League of Legends... just sucks.

Overwatch... Sucks.

Elden Ring... haven't tried yet... I don't see how people can enjoy single player games without any interaction with other players.

Almost all shooting games suck and it's not what it use to be anymore.

I don't know what game to play while I'm not out and at home. I usually just watch a movie or TV show... but I've seen almost everything now. shrugs...

Years ago, I faced the same problem.

So I got into competitive hardware benchmarking and cooling modifications instead.

Benching also can get boring, so finding ways to get cold makes it more interesting.

See, if you stick your head in a toilet bowl then everything's gonna look like shit from your POV, that's kind of what happens when you play multiplayer games, any kind you want: MOBA, MMORPG, Battle Royales, Hero Royales, shooters... they're all terrible games because of how absolutely putrid the "gaming" community is, decayed and rotten to the core, you'll only be surrounded by awful people no matter what game you play, because unless you're like them you're not gonna enjoy it.

Multiplayer games are like an abusive boyfriend and a toxic relationship, they're both terrible things for you but it requires a strong will to get away from them because of the constant up and downs, like having your bf beat you but make up excuses for him because of love or whatever -just an example, if a guy beat me up I'd send him to the hospital- so you say man this game is absolutely terrible but once you win a match you think it's great and keep playing, that's the way they work, like coin operated slot machines in a casino, they're obviously made to siphon as much money and time from you as they can but also give people a fake feeling of satisfacion every once in a while.

This is by far the best way I've seen this written.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

I believe that is a different game then Half-Life. In that FPS, some US Anceny "Black Site" was running a Secret Lab for some experimentation. The Result was an extraterrestrial Invasion and took over Earth.

I don't see how people can enjoy multiplayer games, with the only interactions being with toxic nut-cases.

I almost exclusively only play single player games these days. And what multiplayer games i do play, i make sure that they can be played solo without other player interactions or only specifically with friends, no randoms or shitty matchmaking.

I play games for fun to unwind, not to be yelled at by some dickhead on my team for not following the meta or doing something "wrong" in their eyes.

Agreed so much. MP games burned me out of video games for like 5 years. I still hop on Halo every once in a while, and play Destiny 2 mostly solo. Other than that I have no interest in multiplayer games. It was much more fun when every game didn't have an encompassing meta and you could play how you wanted to. Now days every game feels like it needs to be a MMO where you have to do hours of studying what talents, armor, mods, weapons, pets, and mousepad to use before you can even try to play it. Shooters used to be immune to this, but not anymore.

Take up chess.  You can practice online on lichess or chess.com or combine online chess with going to a physical chess club if you have one within travel distance of where you live.  Also consider other things like card games, board games, dungeons and dragons and other hobbies as well.

Playing games like Starcraft and League of Legends so much that you get either completely bored and worn out or beaten up by League Toxicity will make you hate gaming no matter what you do.

Also try single player games like Roguelike or action platformer roguelike games, or even "traditional" role playing games.  Pathfinder Kingmaker, Pathfinder WOTR, Baldur's Gate 3 and many others.  You don't need to play "against" other people to enjoy gaming.  Or even WITH other people (Co-op, etc).  If you find that you do, then you may need to look at something psychological that you need assistance with (and this forum is definitely not for that).

Gaming is like literature, or art, or movies - meaning there's literally something for everyone.

Try something different.

Indie stuff, platformers, rpg, card collection, puzzles...the list is endless.

Broaden your horizons instead of looking to AAA studios and big name I.P.

The only multi-player games i am interested in usually have a single player element and can be done locally with my kids... so things like

- Raft ( uses steam friends list for multi-player)

- Minecraft (after you fight way through microsofts minor accounts switches to get them allowed to multiplayer 😞 )

other games

- Scrap Mechanic

- Sub Nautica

- Sub Nautica zero

- Windbound

- House Flipper

- Tomb Raider

- Far Cry Primal

- Euro Truck Simulator 2

- Witcher series

So you tried to play a bunch of multiplayer focused games, got tired of the endless repetition and came to the conclusion that single player games suck?

You want something new? You should look at immersive sims (Deus Ex, System Shock, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Dishonored, Prey, Deathloop) or the indie sector. But honestly, and I don't mean this to be insulting, by the way you frame single player games and seem to focus on multiplayer stuff, you don't seem like the kind of person who would get the most out of games that aren't solely about mechanics but also try to engage on a narrative or thematic level. Because if it's interaction with other people you crave, you're bound to not pay attention to plot and themes.

Sounds like you jsut got bored of the multiplayer milking machine, but there are still tons of multiplayer games that provide great fun w/o draining you from your cash. Youjust have to find the right one. For single player though, thinks are a bit... complicated. There are still great single player games being made, but are very few, because the easy money is in the multiplayer BS like skins, mods and upgrades. So a lot of companies basically left out the single player scene and went on full multiplayer cash machine. The other downside of single player games is that they rarely hold any replay value or allow you to browse and enjoy them freely once you finish the story. Despite that few great single player games that are still fun while bringing something new to the table are Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon Zero Dawn, F.E.A.R, Prototype, the original Half-Life remake called Black Mesa. Each of them builds unique atmosphere and has some interesting mechanics. I also find it very relaxing driving my truck in ETS 2 and just enjoying the scenery. And this is even before we enter the realm of tycoons and building simulators like Cities: Skylines or my sister's favorite game - The Sims. You can lose THOUSANDS of hours in those.

Something you might want to look into is the "Eight Kinds of Fun" (documented here: https://gnomestew.com/the-eight-types-of-fun/), because it may help you understand what exactly is missing from your gaming as of late.  It might just be that you're not finding anything new *worth* discovering with other players, or it could just be that as you've gotten older, what you want to get out gaming has changed.  I know what I want in a game these days is very different from what I wanted in a game, say, 15 years ago.

Did this change come up suddenly, or has it been brewing for a while?

You are growing up,and after long time its normal to not enjoy things you do for a long time.

Most of people enjoy gaming because of friends, like me for instance,i cant play Warzone solo or Fornite. But when you have a full squad of friends and you are goofing around and talking then i can play it for hours.

Single player games are amazing, lot of them have a good story and its just relaxing to play at your own pace, save when you want,or just press pause and go do what ever you need to do,without disturbing your progress.

You just need to look for something else or take a bullet and try new genre, not always play the same theme like you always do.

I was always war games/fps  and mmorpg type of player and i just tryed RDR2 cause it was on sale and it is the best game i ever played in my life, and its completly different then anything i was playing before that.

And most importantly you dont need to game, its alright if you dont feel it anymore, just find a new hobby or atleast try it and thats it.Thats life

@Caroline summed it up pretty well. Multiplayer games are the same as a toxic relationship. Couldn't have said it any better. Pretty much all the games that really hooked me in the last few years were singleplayer games.

Most of my friends who still play counter strike have a severe gambling addiction, essentially burning hundreds of $ every month in skin cases hoping someday they will get a $10k knife to sell. And if they're actually playing the game i can hear them raging about the game more than anything else. The only way i really get enjoyment out of these games is in private servers where it's just me and my friends.

Elden Ring is a really great game i can recommend and with a very easy workaround can be played completely offline and without anti-cheat. Just replace the "start_protected_game.exe" (which launches EAC) with the normal "eldenring.exe" and rename it. This also allows useage of the flawless widescreen plugin that unlocks the fps, and generally fixes a few technical shortcomings. In the options you can decline data collection (idk if it really disables is though) and set the game to start in offline mode.

As a direct result of the video game industry steadily growing there will also be more and more developers that are just there for the money. This is not how good games are made and these devs release products, not games. For this reason AAA games are mostly garbage these days and most really interesting games come from the indie scene.

Great examples are for example the Subnautica games.

All in all my interest in games is still there but i also had a point where i also thought it was going away. In the end it was merely my interest in high-energy and stressful online games going away. I was a sweaty try-hard in counter strike 3 or 4 years ago. Nowadays i don't even touch most shooters because they rely mostly on multiplayer and i prefer to relax and play games at my own pace.

Over the last year i discovered the Soulsborne games and it really pulled me back in. But in offline mode. The communinty is just as toxic as in most other games.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

I say you should uninstall all of those games and look for something that's similar but singleplayer, if you like Starcraft kind of strategy games then you'll probably think Elden Ring is bad or too hard and uninstall it as well.

Because most companies focus on multiplayer rather than solo missions, lore and storyline. It's faster and cheaper to release the same game over and over again just reskinned and with new weapons, maps, characters or whatever (Battlefield and CoD sagas) than coming up with the next masterpiece game.

I like Fallout, STALKER, Metro, Half-Life and similar games where you mostly fight fantasy creatures but get a bit of psychological terror and realism when it comes to interacting with human NPCs, at the end of the day those games all try to say that sometimes people are worse than monsters and cause chaos and destruction over anything, in Fallout it's playing 200 years after a war over resources destroyed the world, in STALKER an obscure experiment at Chernobyl goes wrong and you have to find out what's going on, in Metro a nuclear war between NATO and the Soviet Union destroys the world and causes strange mutated creatures to appear, and in Half-Life overcooking a microwave casserole causes an extraterrestrial empire to invade Earth and enslave humanity to make experiments on hybridation and portal technology, a true example of the butterfly effect.

This is THE Best Answer to this question that i have ever read.

I don't see how people can enjoy single player games without any interaction with other players.

Well, by limiting yourself to only the online multiplayer games, you're entirely excluding vast categories of games that can provide you something that isn't "same old, same old." Plus, there are cooperative FPS games you can try, like Borderlands, which offer action and humor.

Everyone games differently, but some of my favorite games are tagged with "Story Rich" and are, naturally, single player. If you're looking for something that isn't just shoot 'em up with online people who may or may not cheat, you're going to have to try some new categories.

XCOM 1&2: turn-based strategy that can be different each playthrough, if you use varying strategies. Also, there are mods out there, specifically The Long War, that add a TON of content and challenge.

Outriders: A shoot 'em up game that was at least fun for me to play with two friends. You can choose your class for powers, and there's at least some semblance of a story there.

Borderlands series: FPS with multiple classes that you can play co-op, and the series offers plenty of humor.

Bioshock series: Another classic FPS series that is well-known for great story.

Dishonored series: Great series with neat story. But especially exciting is the challenge you can set for yourself to run through the game with achievements like "No kills" and/or "Not detected." Truly utilize the environment and stealth tactics to stay fully hidden and solve situations without just blasting through everything. Be prepared to reload a lot!

Mass Effect series: Clearly a well-known story-based series that is 3rd person shooter. Plenty of content and ways to play through all three games.

Oxenfree: creepy, atmospheric game where you make dialogue choices and solve a mystery. Your choices impact the characters, and you can play through multiple times to get different results.

Kentucky Route Zero: a point-and-click game that is also odd and atmospheric.

Thimbleweed Park: Another point-and-click game that is very much in the style of the old classics of the series, intentionally making fun of the genre and its history. If you want to play a point-and-click that shows what it was like in the 1980s without having to deal with emulators, this is the one to try.

Orcs Must Die series: A co-op tower defense strategy game. You get some powers and have to build up your defenses/traps to stop the waves of orcs that attack you.

I find myself not enjoying playing video games anymore. It all seems so boring, same ol. I need something fresh, something new, and almost all of these games are just clones of each other.

Elden Ring... haven't tried yet... I don't see how people can enjoy single player games without any interaction with other players.

That is actually a fairly common problem with gaming. Sometimes it just gets stale. Sometimes you might have to just open your mind and just try some other stuff, such as Elden Ring or Breath Of the Wild. Those two games are good ones to lose yourself in. Even slow, more storied games may be a nice change of pace from constantly playing those Quake arena shooters. Even a puzzle game or two may be worth trying--maybe some type of Tetris, or Floating Point.

I usually just watch a movie or TV show... but I've seen almost everything now. shrugs...

I recommend Cities Skylines if you're into a pretty in-depth game that can challenge your sanity at times. It is single player, but imo I think it's very fun. Cities skylines is pretty much a city building game, so idk if you're into that but I figured I'd throw in a suggestion anyways.

please tag me for a response, It's really hard to keep tabs on every thread I reply to. thanks!!

Last time i played online (other than tekken) was a Chinese hack and slash (battle royale style) game and it wasn't toxic at all... sure you always get some annoying players, but i mean it 99% of the time people were just friendly helping me out and stuff (since i was new) i specifically played on Chinese server too, and well they could see im [eu] but no one complained... they were friendly, even opponents sometimes (of course usually they'd try to kill me lol)

The only time someone was kinda aggressive was when that Chinese girl was kinda scolding me  - i didn't understand her but i think she just wanted me to play more serious  ... cause i definitely was screwing around when she came over lol... it was honestly kinda cute , and she was aggressive but didn't *really* sound angry if that makes sense?

Like they're really showing you around,  show you spots for weapons,  different tactics,  etc... ive seen this in many games (resident evil too btw)

i also met a few really friendly western players...

i had similar experiences in previous games i played (like monster hunter) so i do think it really depends on the games and not necessarily the online part.

i mean in these threads people usually always talk are about the same games and companies,  cod, blizzard,  csgo, siege? etc etc...  there are more games than ego shooters, play a Korean mmo or heck, wow, and see if that's more to your liking,  imo...

edit: i see u tried lost ark... well it does look great, but also kind of boring tbh...

then try monster hunter ... usually lots of people play that (i only played world, the new one doesn't seem to be so great due to the artstyle to me, but maybe it's your thing and the gameplay is still good - i know cause i played the demo)

I feel almost the same buddy, I'm still gaming sometimes but the games that I like to play are old or light enough to run on cheaper computers...

Months ago I owned a 3950X and a RX 5700, I sold both and now I have a 5700G and I use the integrated graphics. It feels like nothing changed here except the power bill, even on work tasks.

i kinda lost playing games as one point in my left i broken up with gf and move out and had little moeny at the time and got vary cheap internet to save up moeny. so i would just watch youtube (even thow it was in 160p...) and i would watch people play games instead. and well still do so i guess that's why i dont play as much as i once did.
