GPU isn't peaking, yet no stable max FPS?

If my GPU isn't at a 100% usage why wouldn't it be maxing FPS?

It seems like you have a CPU bottleneck. That can mean several things. 馃槈聽It is not always easy to detect. Most likely, the game is running on a few of your 6 cores and might even be maxing those out. Even if you cannot see a core at 100%, there might still at least be some bottlenecking.聽

I had a Xeon 1230 with a 1050 before and that was a great showcase for that. (none of my core were full loaded, but after switching to the ryzen cpu the 1050 went up to 100% all the time)

Personally, my 3600 is fine in most titles, BUT on some it will limit my 3060 to 90 or even just 80% usage. try to run Afterburner and observe the CPU useage per core.聽
Have you overclocked your system at all?

GPU: GTX 2080 Ti

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600

Monitor: Asus TUF VG27AQ (QHD, 144 hz, G-Sync compatible)

I came to notice that in some games my FPS varies around 110 to 130, which I find really odd since at that point my GPU is around 60% usage or less...

What's going on?

use vsync or limit framerate otherwise if you prefer a stable experience.

Ryzen 5 2600

probably cpu bottleneck tbh

JFYI 1 thread close to 100% is enough to make a game stall, the overall usage can be very misleading and deceptive therefore.

And your cpu isnt really聽 recommended for that gpu. will it work? yes, of course. will it be a great experience? probably not.

Vsync might still be able to safe you. : p

the wording here heavily implies that you in fact didnt聽 check per core/thread usage, which is necessary.聽 recommend HWINFO64 to do that.

@mapegl@Mark Kaine

I haven't checked CPU usage, only the GPU usage but through an overlay using GeForce Experience. I will check that once again by using the suggested HWINFO64 a bit later and post an update here

Thank you guys 馃檪

Dunno if HWINFO can record, but there is no value in just knowing if the CPU ever hit 100%. It is much more interesting what happens over time. Again, no idea if HWINFO can do that. I haven't used it for that myself. Usually I use Afterburner so I can see right away live what is happening.

pretty cool actually

yes that is ideal, needs to be set up first however, same like HWINFO64 actually, which can just like afterburner use the riva tuner overlay btw. typically i use a mix of both (esp if i want to check cpu usage

for example the whole lower part is HWINFO64, the upper part is afterburner, so i can easily switch off one or the other (typically i dont need to know聽 per core usage etc, i just wanna know temps, vram, etc)

Actually... @Hi P@mapegl聽the best thing here is afterburner monitoring... because its actually quite hard to keep 12 or so "cores" in check in an overlay...

abcpuexa88jzq.thumb.png.2e1a43a767abe475267193823683f58c.png

but, it still needs to be set up first i think, just tick on every cpu "core" usage thing there is... and then after playing a game for 10 minutes or so, check the monitor (detach in afterburner) pause it (right click) then check all cores.

and yes 1 rare spike is probably irrelevant, but if there are several , or constant very high usage, then well, this is a problem!

@mapegl@Mark Kaine

I've gone ahead and used MSI Afterburner as suggested by both

- Max framerate cap 141

- G-sync compatibility

- V-sync

It was on native resolution, not NIS, my FPS were around 90 to 110 I think

ok, so you're pretty much almost maxed out on most cores, that means this is the max you can do, with this cpu. i would聽 just limit the framerate, if 141 works thats fine , if it still feels unstable try 121.

Oh man these are bad news, at least it isn't in all games

I guess I can upgrade once the 7000 series come out

thats what im thinking, its just a reality with this cpu, on the bright side there should be lots of headroom once OP upgrades the cpu, to something 6/8 core 10th gen intel for example.

...or just a 5600X without any other changes.聽

That all really depends on the planned upgrade path though. I would personally go with the 5600X, but if OP is already planning for the next GPU upgrade, then it makes sense to go for the best CPU possible (within budget).聽

yeah, it was just an example what i think is a minimum upgrade thats worth it.

5000 series cpu OP would likely need a new mobo too though, and maybe even psu, depending on what they have now.

Thank you guys for the help

I guess I'll just wait for the Ryzen 7000 series to future proof a bit, I will buy the AM5 motherboard as well as DDR5 RAM聽

I would love to upgrade the GPU but that's not gonna happen with these prices!!! 馃槥
