Using a Mining GPU for a PC

Istandcat

I saw a Crypto mining rig with a few 3090's going for 500 on ebay and wondered whether the gpu's could be used for a pc i'm building (first build)?

3090 is one of the fastest GPUs you can get, so absolutely. However, I would be very surprised if the machine actually sells for 500 if those GPUs are legit/in working condition. In the current market they could be sold for way above that.

Can you drop a link to the listing? I'm not a giant fan of Ebay, and $500 for multiple 3090's seems wayyy too cheap, especially in this current market.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

There's no way it's that cheap. There's some catch. What's the listing link? They're probably not working right.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

RTX 3090s are selling for thousands of dollars each. You're not going to find someone selling multiple for $500 total. Check the listing isn't an auction, $500 might just be the starting price of the auction. It could also just be a scam.

But to answer your other question there's no reason you can't use an RTX 3090 in a gaming computer - the problem is finding one at a reasonable price.

500$ starting price on an auction seems ok.

If its 500 for some 3090s, that sounds like a way to end up with a box of air.

Just now, Istandcat said:

but the multibuy thingy said 500?

You pay £500 to reserve it, then you pay the remaining £21000 when you go pick it up.

Ya need to read the details. First rule of thumb, if it seems too good to be true, it almost always isn't.

That's like when people list something on Facebook marketplace for $1 so it gets put to the top of the page when searching price low to high but in the description say "actual price $250".

You can report them to eBay for bad listing practices. eBay takes a percentage cut of sales so them doing it this way will definitely not make eBay happy. Also you lose any form of protection you have through eBay doing the sale like that, at best ebay would only cover the $500 not the other $21,000 they want you to wire separately by bank transfer or cryptocurrency payment. This split payment method is also often a tactic used by scammers so I would never recommend doing it.

Respectable, well known retailers. You won't be getting an RTX 3090 though.

There might be cards to be found on the used market but there's a lot of scams right now due to the crazy demand for GPUs so be vigilant. Avoid anything that sounds too good to be true and avoid scalpers (people selling new in box cards for above retail prices).

Also avoid any websites advertising graphics cards at below retail cost on social media such as Facebook and Instagram (including through sponsored/ad content). There's so many scam websites popping up putting up fake listings for GPUs at low prices and running off with people's money not delivering anything. Anyone can setup a website in under an hour with a store front for GPUs. Stick to well known respected online retailers.

Do you really think that in the current market people will sell a 3090 at such a price?!

It's possible that they are dead, have issues or other things you don't want to deal with.

At that price range you can get a 1080 Ti,which is a pretty good card.
