Anime Club - Heaven Society

JLCitadel

Look, we all know that Phantom World has one purpose: fanservice. I hope you didn't mistake it as something with actual potential beyond that? The intro to the first episode was all the BS you needed to hear to know that your brain should be off while watching it.

I dropped it after that episode. That girl casting resurrection spell few times in a couple minutes was quite annoying. That was not a reason why i dropped it though.

I'm enjoying machi machi too :)

hate to keep bringing it up, but did you guys happen notice anything weird about the art style?

something just looks.. really off about it,

I ended up rambling at Vitalius about it.

it looks to have visually regressed, aside from fancy canned animation tech for magic or whatever

comparing it to things like hibike, hyouka etc it flat out doesn't look very good.

hell, even the 'camera' work was awkward at some points

granted that wouldn't make or break but damn give me something to work with here

you can usually make that a selling point for kyoani

Yes, it felt pretty phoned-in to me right form the get-go, though I haven't bothered watching past the first episode. My bigger gripe wasn't the art style's weirdness (like the bizarre proportions of the fighter girl), but the way it felt like they had no idea how to physics... and I don't just mean the gross limbo scene, but also other things like the guy managing to somehow shoot under the girl falling down the stairs. It felt like they were struggling to animate something outside of their comfort zone, and came across as kinda amateurish in weird ways. I was reminded of Amaburi, but while that just felt cheap this felt vaguely uncomfortable to watch. Unfortunately, a lot of in-between frames and pretty colors can't cover everything up.

I am learning about Usenet.

Usenet interests me, but I have to pay for access, bleh. Not online that, but I'm not too familiar with "the usual spot." Like how the torrent community has KAT, TPB, and anime specifically has nyaa, etc.

So... some things.

If you want to torrent and want privacy/security, you have to have a VPN. Which usually requires money anyway. Unless your ISP just doesn't care enough to send you cease & desist letters.

With Usenet, you require a Usenet Provider only because ISPs block the Usenet newsgroups that are mostly for sharing of media files (aka copyright infringement).

Usenet was originally for discussion groups. Those are all freely accessible with Google Groups. A Usenet provider SSL's your connection, so ISPs can't stop you from accessing the other newsgroups for other things.

Usenet works in newsgroups. They are what they sound like. Groups of news provided by users for discussion. They look like URLs kinda.

./begin-copy-paste.fil

There are nine main top-level Usenet hierarchies, and many secondary ones. The newsgroup hierarchies in place today developed over a span of several years, with the standard categories consisting of alt and the Usenet 8 as listed below:

  • alt - alternative, popular topics
  • comp - computer science subjects
  • humanities - humanities subjects
  • misc - miscellaneous groups
  • news - news topics
  • rec - recreational subjects
  • sci - science topics
  • soc - sociological subjects
  • talk - controversial topics
There are thousands of other top-level hierarchies in use across the Usenet, and thousands of lower level hierarchies.

./end-copy-paste.fil

So an example of a newsgroup is the following:

  • alt.binaries.anime.<anime>

alt is the primary newsgroup, binaries is a sub-newsgroup, and anime is the topic, in a way.

Specifically, alt.binaries.* is where most media files are stored. Meaning it's the one where you go to download all sorts of content, either copyrighted, or not, and it's blocked by most, if not all, ISPs.

To use Usenet, you need the following things:

  • A newgroup reader.

Google Groups, as mentioned above, is a newsgroup reader.

If you want to access the blocked newsgroups, you need a subscription to a Usenet provider.

Pros of downloading media from Usenet:

  • It comes directly from a server and not a swarm of peers. So downloads are basically 100% or wtv of your dedicated bandwidth all the time.
  • The connection is SSL'd so people can't see what you are up to.
  • Files are stored for anywhere from 1500-2600 days (4-7 years) by your Usenet provider.
  • Subscribing to a newsgroup basically means you can automate this process entirely (Torrents have RSS feeds for that).
  • alt.binaries.* tend to have.... well... some pretty low-key (i.e. not well known, hard to find, etc.) stuff. I'm not talking porn or gore here. Just interesting things you won't find on Youtube and the like.
  • It's "one-way", meaning you just download. No uploading is required or even necessary.

Cons of downloading media from Usenet:

  • Requires a paid for connection (albeit inexpensive) to a Usenet provider that can't be used for any other Internet obfuscation like a VPN can be (you can't use usenet to go to www.google.com), but who uses VPN for something other than torrents?
  • Large files can have missing pieces. Usually if something is uploaded in segments, and one gets deleted due to old age while another does not, you can get 1/2 a file and be stuck with that half.
  • Higher learning curve than Torrents.

Note: Quality Usenet providers always have SSL protection and good file upkeep (meaning, they stay a long time, aren't corrupt, and such). Some Usenet Providers don't have the SSL protection. #watsthepoint.jpg

Torrents, imo, are only better for new and hugely popular things due to swarm size.

It's like $80 a year for a Usenet Subscription. I pay more for PrivateInternetAccess as a VPN.

Not much difference imo.

so your ISP doesn't care.

Warner Brothers likes to send mean spirited letters that state you should pay them "$300 per item" to quickly absolve or wtv legal issues due to copyright infringement, if your ISP cares.

So, a friend just elaborated on how the trade of "piracy" works.

Someone makes the original rip of wtv. This usually gets uploaded to a FTP server that is exclusive to a group of people who rip and share media. You get access by offering up media to the server. By uploading said media, you get access to other media. Trading rips. Basically, the root of piracy (trade).

These FTP servers inevitably have leaks of their content to Usenet newsgroups who don't follow that principle and instead do the money thing. Where a Usenet provider stores the files on their servers for their subscribers.

These inevitably get leaked via Bit Torrent or what-have-you and that is how they get to be torrents.

So torrents are bottom tier. They are the poor man's piracy, by logic, because they are free and easy. FTP servers require active participation to access. A gentlemen's club of piracy, essentially. You only get in if you get movies and episodes of shows before anyone else, and are willing to share them.

Usenets are just the monetization on that idea via leaks. They require money to access, so that's a different, easier, barrier to entry.

Torrents are just "if you want it and you have an hour to figure it out the first time, you can have it. Bonus points if you avoid viruses".

So yeah. Pretty cool to know how that works.

A thing: There are groups who rip media and directly upload it to torrents and stuff. But FTP servers tend to get things notably earlier simply because of how they work (i.e. exclusivity is how they work).

Thanks for the info. Definitely gonna look it. Although with torrents I do use a VPN. I have PIA. They're yearly plan is like $40... Not sure why you're paying $80.

Cool.

Oh, you see that little $83 or wtv that's crossed out above the $39.95 a year thing? That actually used to be the price I think. They must be doing a sale or something. Surprising. Most companies don't use actual $$$ amounts for sales.

I don't really know much about either but from I can grasp usenet is giving you some of the benefits of joining a private tracker group like what . cd or animebytes except you have to pay for it?

The only benefit I can really see to usenet is not having to upload.

Edit:

Also vitalius quit calling it piracy. Copying data isn't the same as hopping on someones boat, causing them physical harm, and stealing their physical goods. Calling it piracy is one of my pet peeves.

Yeah. You can't just "join" a private group. Having to pay is the trade-off for not having whatever the private group would want from you.

Well, did you read my post?

TL;DR:

You get bandwidth saturating connections regardless of age of file as long as the file/entire file is there.

You get privacy/security equivalent or better to a VPN (which you'd pay for anyway).

You'd (probably) get files earlier by default.

Kek, ok. file sharing it is then.

HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG

Vitalius leveled up.

Vitalius learned "Omni-boot (USB)".

TL;DR: A thing you install on a flash drive that boots .iso's, .img's, .wtv's of OS' from a menu it generates dynamically.

So, say I install it on my flash drive. I drag and drop various Windows and Linux ISOs to it's folder. That's it. That's all I have to do.

I boot from said drive -> menu pops up asking me what OS I want to run.

This is magnificent.

http://www.rmprepusb.com/documents/release-2-0/Install_RMPrepUSB_Full_v2.1.730.zip?attredirects=0&d=1

http://files.easy2boot.com/200001527-b3c2ab4bbc/Easy2Boot_v1.76.7z

So you get it: you use the first link to install the 2nd link's image to a USB. Then you drag and drop the OS images into the folder on the USB. Easy peasy mostly.

You can use this to create custom Windows partition images, so you don't have to have a plain Windows install each time:

http://www.easy2boot.com/download/mpi-pack/

Guide to how to do this: http://www.easy2boot.com/introduction/

This is an alternative to the above method:

Yep I read your post.

The thing is that for the most part many of my friends and I don't bother using vpns for that because none of our various isps have sent letters. Even with downloading new stuff. Like I know multiple people who have downloaded movies that were leaked before they hit theaters and they never received a notice. I think the difference is that afaik its only illegal to upload copyrighted content in canada. You are free to download it as you please.

As for the file always being there, well its like you said 4-7 years.  I feel like for that time frame it would exist on a private tracker as well.

>file sharing

yea its better. Piracy implies that you are harming someone. And for the most part unless its something new the only person you are harming is the copyright holder. Which is often not the same group of people who actually created the content. Say I download random music from 10 years ago. Maybe the band isn't even around anymore. You certainly aren't harming the creator. They aren't making money off it anymore. And lets say they are still around. Well in this case you might actually be benefiting them. You download their random old album and you liked it. Now maybe you tell people about or go to see show they are putting on. You buy some merch from them of which all money beyond the material value of the merch goes straight to the content creator. Unlike buying their album which unless is it self-released most of the profit probably won't go to the band anyways.  I could go much deeper into this but I won't I am sure I got the point across.

More coming up tomorrow...

I was surprised by the amount of people who showed up earlier... We went beyond the capacity of the hall that was rented by the event organizers and spilled out onto the various parts of the mall (not a small building, 6 floors, over 200 meters in length)... this made the mall management force themselves to open up the other hall since the number of people were disrupting the businesses on the floor...

This is magnificent.

So you get it: you use the first link to install the 2nd link's image to a USB. Then you drag and drop the OS images into the folder on the USB. Easy peasy mostly.

This thing even has a built-in QEMU emulator so you can test the menu options without rebooting.

AH YUS.

For my pertinent links to guides, reviews, and anything similar, go here, and look under the spoiler labeled such. A brief history of Unix and it's relation to OS X by Builder.

and back from school and day 1 of a local anime con...

Yes... those are 8-10USD figures... and very well made for the price...Pretty much stuck with these two cosplayers along with our group...Yes... that is Kongou on a swegway... and it helps her 'animate' her performance by adding action...

lots of impressive and not-so impressive cosplays in the area... the battle of the bands is decent too... the name of the band that won was "NTR"...
Can't show the other side because it'll be against CoC...Returning tomorrow with the same group for more shens... while testing out the RAW output of the Oppo R7 Lite camera... and finishing off my current roll of film using a friend as my subject...Fun stuff. I wouldnt mind visting something like that. Not enough people here though.
