New external usb drive

Christian G

my sister bought me an external usb drive (seagate ultra touch backup plus 2 tb) and i want to use it as my new drive, for boot, os, and games/apps. what usb port; color. should i plug it into? i have a sabertooth 990 fx motherboard and my current drive is an internal hdd.  (ST500DM0 02-1BC142 SATA Disk Device 500 GB) or should i just not use the external drive at all? any help needed, thanks!

USB can be really useful to your commputer, like:

  • Make your computer boot faster (ReadyBoost)
  • Recover your password
  • Recover your entire OS in case something goes wrong (espically with the damm HDD)
  • Use as an unlock key for your computer

But the USB drive you say is too large, just install 16GB recovery on the disk is not worth. You can use it as a second drive!

That's a mechanical hard drive, so it would be no better than your current hard drive. In fact, your internal drive is a 7200 RPM drive, so it could outperform the external drive, not to mention the fact that it's an internal drive and it can't accidentally be unplugged.

If you're looking to speed up your computer then you'll need to get an SSD for your boot drive.

Phobos: AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 16GB 3000MHz DDR4, ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, 1TB Samsung SSD 980, 450W Corsair CXM, Corsair Carbide 175R, Windows 10 Pro

Polaris: Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASRock X79 Extreme6, 12GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, 1TB Crucial MX500, 750W Corsair RM750, Antec SX635, Windows 10 Pro

Pluto: Intel Core i7-2600, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASUS P8Z68-V, 4GB XFX AMD Radeon RX 570, 8GB ASUS AMD Radeon RX 570, 1TB Samsung 860 EVO, 3TB Seagate BarraCuda, 750W EVGA BQ, Fractal Design Focus G, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

York (NAS): Intel Core i5-2400, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3, HP Compaq OEM, 240GB Kingston V300 (boot), 3x2TB Seagate BarraCuda, 320W HP PSU, HP Compaq 6200 Pro, TrueNAS CORE (12.0)

oh okay, so the external drive is pretty much useless for just using it as my main. i'll buy an ssd later and just store this one away somewhere if i ever use backups. the ssd someone told me to get a while back was the "870 QVO SATA III 2.5" SSD 2TB" so i'll get that. thanks though!

Curious, why would you want to use a USB external drive as your boot drive?
