W11 slow SMB speeds

kaneelschep

Hi all.

I am a W7 person.. Lets admit this straight away.

But with games now starting to exclude it, and my pc being a mess anyway.

I thought; Lets get with the new.. Why not. it will be fun!

So I installed W10. Big hate immediately build up inside of me. I hate W10.. sorry.

So I installed W11. 馃槃聽聽 And I kinda like it. for now ;)

Anyway. The issue!

I have a synology nas as a media server. In W7 I used to get full gigabit speeds in copying and streaming from it.

In W11 (and W10) I get 2mbyte/s... When I fiddle a bit with the SMB settings on the nas, sometimes it goes to gigabit speeds again like normal.

But then after next reboot, or just 6 minutes later. its back to the 2mbyte/s again. Even though the options are unchanged in the nas SMB client. Very strange indeed.

Then I checked the logs. a user checking logs 馃槷

The times it was slow it was using ipv6 instead ipv4.

I turned ipv6 off for the ethernet card and now it keeps doing gigabit tranfers from the nas..

So all good. But a bit weird still. I will just turn ipv6 off on the DHCP in the router. I guess.

I figured this all out while writing this. So. yeah.

But thanks anyway! ;)

  • 1 month later...

Turns out i never had ipv6 on in the router. I just switched to ipfire and wasnt sure at moment of typing. For fix, I just switched off ipv6 in windows adapter settings of my pc..

I just changed router to opnsense, and now know for sure ipv6 is turned off. But my devices are still getting ipv6 link local ip adresses though..

I never noticed this before to be honest.. And I am not to well knowledged about ipv6.聽 If someone has the quick lowdown on why I am getting this, would be cool 馃槈

I run an X5650 on a gigabyte X58 motherboard.

This local-link ipv6 address seems to be like the 169 address you get when not connected to router with ipv4.

But why and how would it connect to my nas with that?
