Upgrading to a nvidia rtx 3090

Bidders998

So I’ve got a prebuilt sky tech shadow 3.0 had it for a little under a year. It came with a rtx 3060 which isn’t cutting it. It also has a ryzen 5 3600 which I intend to swap for a ryzen 9 5900x or 5950x. Temps are fine as is but I’ve read that the 3090’s especially the nvidia run hot and that the case isn’t the best for airflow.  Case is a thermaltake h200tg which currently has the stock single 120 mm upfront, a 120 mm on the back, and a dual 120 mm on the top. Planning on replacing all of them with 140mms and adding a second to the front. Is this going to be enough cooling or should I be looking at one of those aftermarket gpu coolers that take up an additional slot? I plan on taking advantage of the 120+ FPS at 4K for gaming. Any advice would be appreciated, if I can avoid it though I’d rather not upgrade the case at this time.

Yes, the case airflow is pretty bad....it has a very restrictive front.

What motherboard did the system come with?

If it's a pretty cheap / low-tier motherboard, you may need/want to consider swapping the motherboard too.

Ryzen 5900X and 5950X are quite a bit more power hungry than a Ryzen 3600 -- especially at full load, or overclocked.

RTX 3090?

You are not going to get 120+ FPS 4K (High / Ultra) gaming even with a RTX 3090.

At least NOT across the board.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything said here. The motherboard you have is likely not up to the task of comfortably pushing a 5900x/5950x to its full potential. Not to mention that those CPU's at 4K aren't really benefiting you at all. The highest end you'd need to go is a 5600x.

As for the 3090, I own one, and I rarely see those framerates even at 3440x1440 which is quite a bit lower than 4K. Also, its a terrible buy. The 3080 gets you 90% of the way there and the 3080Ti is basically on par. I have one because back in January I was desperate for a GPU and its the only thing I could get in my cart during a Best Buy drop and its an FE model I got at MSRP.

Thanks for the heads up. That’s depressing for that kind of money you’d expect more. Makes me not want to bother messing with it. If I decide to go ahead with the 3080 and the 5600x will that fan setup cover it? The board is a biostar b450 mh. Guess I could upgrade that with the money I’d save going down to the 3080. What would you recommend? Was trying to avoid gutting the whole build and starting from scratch basically. It’s amazing to me that the series x will supposedly push 60 FPS at 4K but it’s such a hassle to get even above 100 out of a pc that will be 6 times the price. Again thanks for the advice it’s very much appreciated.

btw is your psu sufficient for 3080?

afaik it's recommended to use a 750w with 2/3 pcie cables (don't use the pigtails)
