Windows 8.1: Is it worth it?

Hello.

I built my first computer, back in around November/December of 2013. My dad hoped scrap up a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. I like Windows 7, but I've been interested lately, about getting Windows 8.1, and probably disabling Metro.

Thoughts?

(Please put your experiences with Windows 8.1 and opinions.)

~Stephen.

Seeing as you currently can't disable metro, I would go with 7 (it's what I use).

Hopefully Microsoft fixes Windows 8 in future revisions, than maybe I'll use it.

I'd go with Windows 8. If the Start Menu bothers you that much, get a program that brings the old one back.

Well, I know it can't be disabled, but I saw a video that said it can be.... Stashed away. If you know what I mean.

If you can get it for free from your Dad, sure. If you're going to need to pay for it, I'd just stay with Windows 7.

I think Windows 8.1 is better than Windows 7.

Why?

• Boots up faster

• DirectX 11.2

• Better gaming performance

• Uses less system resources ( is lighter )

• Metro is actually useful to place my program icons at

• More customization

• Updating Windows is easier

• Besides that it's the same as Windows 7 but smoother.

I can afford the Student version for $70, but another concern is that is it are you able to keep EVERYTHING if I'm upgrading from 7 to 8.

Yeah, I like the color customization. My main concern is that if I'm upgrading, that I can keep EVERYTHING from Windows 7.

not worth the money, if you were getting a new PC then 8 definitely but not sure you will really benefit spending money on it, performance is slightly better but not by the money worth

Thats a good setup u got there...i think u will definitely get better performance if u go with 8.1...it does increase fps in some case as well as less ram usage...

whoever says that you should use windows 7 instead of 8.1 is wrong.

Firstly: faster boot time

Second: much less memory and cpu usage.

Third: Better gaming performance in newer games.

Forth: Clean and smooth user interface, you will get used to it in few days or so, i reverted back to windows 7 and missed 8.1 so much, now i reinstalled it :D

Fifth: Better copy speeds

You're gonna have to explain to me how Win8 has more customization?

Either way, Windows 8 is not bad. I personally still prefer Windows 7 as it works just fine, I know it very well, and I know how to tweak & customize it better.

I have heavy experience with both.. So I must say.. The choice is yours.

Interface, split-screen for applications ( sort of multi-tasking ).

Metro is also a thing.

Logging in with your Microsoft account OR a local account, Account Select background is customizable, etc.

if you completely ignore the metro ui and install costum stuff to make it look like windows, yeah. metro gives you headaches when you use it and makes you throw the pc through the window

if yuo already have a os then you dont need to upgrade to win 8. but you can get faster boot times and there are updates to window 8 that will be adding the win 7 style start back in and for now there are apps that do that
