Upgrading PC, maybe cpu also causes problems and should be upgraded first?

CylonNL

Hi Linus Tech Tips folks,

(I was not sure where to post this "troubleshooting" or in "new builds and planning" please correct me if I posted it in the wrong section, i guess in my case it little bit of both.)

My current issue, but it's workable:

When I'm downloading shaders for warzone, my computer sometimes freezes, and the LED lights of my CPU cooler also lag. Same as youtube or music on my second screen stops working until it's finished downloading the shaders.

When I have task manager open, it says 100% CPU usage (also with NVIDIA reflex latecy disabled).

Detail information about the system:

Bios version: E7B50IMS.140 (02/26/2019)  I did also upgrade to 7B50v1C1 (2021-02-17) (same issue)

Bios settings: Game boost enabled, XMP enabled

Bios displaying: CPU speed 4.7 ghz and DDR speed 3000 mhz

OS: Windows 10 PRO (10.0.0.19043 build 19043) 64bit

Current parts:  https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KMhxnL

No overclocking of CPU or GPU software running on windows.

Wish for the upgrade:

I'm wondering if I can achieve better fps performance in Warzone on 2k, no I have around stable 100 fps.

Currently, when I'm playing Warzone my CPU is most at the time at 100% usage within windows task manager, so my thoughts are that I should first upgrade my CPU? Because warzone is also CPU heavy has been told to me.

I didn't do any overclocking, only enabled in the BIOS the special gaming mode.

Budget (including currency): 200-500 euro for maybe a new CPU and motherboard? GPUs are too pricy currently to buy, so probably skip for now?

Country: The Netherlands

Games, programs, or workloads that it will be used for: Warzone, battlefield 2042, and F1

Current parts:    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KMhxnL

12th gen is about to come out, but that CPU alone is above your budget, idk much that's better which you can squeeze for under $500 maybe i5-12600k, not certain on those prices though

Sounds like the lack of hyperthreading on your CPU is the issue.   You can wait for the next gens, or pop in a 9900kf.

Im surprised a file transfer would effect the cpu at all considering any computer from the last 30 years is capable of network file transfers with resonable cpu usage.

Even during the game 100% usage seems unresonable but at least more likely

I think "downloading shaders" is actually "optimizing shaders" which if my mind serves me correctly can be a CPU heavy process.

Do you know if the 12th gen has the same socket, that I have on my motherboard? Maybe I should wait and see what the entry prices are maybe I can get some more money by then for it.

EDIT: I just found out that it is a new socket 🙂

I'm fairly sure (almost certain) that they change the socket every generation
