My thoughts

Facebook hasn't really done anything to suggest that it has any real grip in the metaverse universe, other than saying that's what it wants to do. I feel like it would be smarter for them to take the Oculus brand that direction or create a new brand central to the Metaverse. Oh well, I don't use The Facebook anyway.

Some of the people I've interacted with don't even know what it's called just that the big white f is what they need. Last time facebook changed the logo a bit they thought it was gone :p.

 

But basically nobody here calls it facebook so a rebrand is gonna hurt it more than it will help which is good. I'd love for Facebook to just woosh away into obscurity :p.

Considering that this is Facebook we are talking about, I sincerely hope for the sake of humanity that they fall flat on their face attempting this "metaverse". Out of all the companies out there they are quite possibly the worst choice for something like this given their track record of utter disregard for the privacy and mental health of their users. However, (I hate to admit it tho) Facebook is one of the few companies that could actually pull this off.

But since VRChat or Second Life is owned by a company, it's not yet there.

 

But ultimately we're not there. Facebook is doing this because it's been investing in VR tech, but it ultimately wants to own the hardware and the "universe" you use it it a la Ready Player One. The problem is that Facebook doesn't own anything that like that. That we know of.

 

Instanced gaming (eg FPS games, 4vs4, 4vs1, etc) is used for cost-effectiveness and partitioning virtual worlds so more people can play, but not together. So that's not "metaverse", that's just private rooms. History has shown the more people you put into the same world, the more likely a bad actor will plot to ruin it, for their own fun.

 

So I'll make two predictions here:

A) Facebook is intending to scan your photos and make an avatar of "you" for some platform they have in mind.

B) Facebook is intending to leverage their VR investments into making a platform where you can use virtual versions of you to interact with virtual versions of other "real" people.

 

But it's facebook, so you know your privacy is an after-thought.
