ddr5 prices are ewwwie!šŸ¢šŸ¤¢šŸ¤®

was so happy to build a 12900k and then I saw that 32gb of ddr5 is 350$ at cl40 4800mhz. thatā€™s 700$ for 64gb

Ā

so I could build a 128gb ddr4 for like 700? Ā should i get ddr4 with 12900k or what?

Ā

Ā iā€™m giving away my current pc so iā€™ll have to upgrade i just donā€™t think iā€™d wanna pay 350$ for junk ddr5 when i can literally get royal elite for the same price and double the ram and itā€™ll look way better and probably perform better too.

Ā

we got like 18 more days till 12th gen intel! I really think Iā€™ll just get ddr4 because ddr5 is going to be horrible for like 2 years.Ā

Ā

by the time i need to upgrade the 12900k ddr5 will already be obsolete too. so itā€™s pretty much wait another 2 years to upgrade which i cannot do. i need a top of the line cpu.Ā

Ā

so itā€™s either 64gb of junk ddr5 or 128gb top of the line ddr4. id pick 128gb of ddr4.Ā

Ā

get a nice lil asus prime z690 12900k and 128gb ddr4. man thatā€™ll last me like 7 years. I think thatā€™s like 1.7kĀ all together? nothing specialā€¦Ā

Ā

the games that i play could literally be played on a dual core roflā€¦ actually some even single core. I just feel like getting top of the line cpu because mining pays it off quite easily.Ā

just bought 4 more 6600s.

Ā

so what do you guys think? ddr4 or ddr5? at this point they might as well start giving away ddr4 for free tbh

Ā

I am assuming that 12900k will also support DDR4. I would go with DDR4 until DDR5 is usable. Plus you can get like 3600MHz cl14 DDR4 nowadays.

Ā

Also Even if the 12900k supports DDR5, it doesn't mean DDR5 will be available right away. It still could be awhile.

I'd wait for the benchmarks. Every major reviewer I watch (Hardware Unboxed, Gamers Nexus, Jayztwocents, etc) has said they're going to be benchmarking Alder Lake both ways to see if there's a difference. Some will probably do so in a separate content piece after the launch, but you will have plenty of data before long to make an informed decision.

In other words you don't need one and are just complaining your new toys are expensive. DDR5 is brand spanking new whereas DDR4 has now been around for the proverbial ages. There is zero surprise that it's expensive.

As far as top of the line CPUs go, I don't think the 12900K is going to be it. It's an 8P-8E with 24 threads, which puts it squarely between the 5900X and 5950X in cores/threads. I'm not sure how much extra performance Intel will manage to squeeze out of a new node, but even if it's in the 15% range, AMD will easily make that up with Zen 3D, let alone Zen 4, when that comes out next year.

Trolling, IMO.

But to answer the actual question:Ā  I'd go 2x16GB DDR4 3600Mhz 16CL and tighten them a little.Ā  Add more DDR4 when you need, or grab some DDR5 when it comes down in price.

wait for benchmarks on performance diff between ddr4 and ddr5, and we don't even know if 12th gen benches can be trusted yet, nothing but synthetics, and some of it was even on windows 11 lol...

Personally I'm skipping first gen DDR5 systems and hybrid core designs. It might be great, but I'll let someone else do the beta testing.

from the comments iā€™m probably skipping ddr5 too. itā€™ll be like 2 years till we get good ddr5. yea we will have to wait and see the benchmarks first from actual people. iā€™ll probably be running like 4, 5 gpus on this pc so i think idle 12900k will be really good because of the small/big cores. I donā€™t see intel going over 16 cores for the next 3 years tbh and also donā€™t see ryzen doing it either. I think theyā€™llĀ just be adding more efficiency and speed from now on. I donā€™t even see the 12900k being a real 16 cores. To me itā€™s like a twin turbo vtec honda engine. yea it can destroy a 8 cylinder car or even 12 but itā€™ll waste so much more fuel, power in order to do so. The 5950x might not be as powerful but itā€™s like twice as efficient. Same goes for my 3700x, its literally one of the most efficient cpus. I really hope 12th gen doesnā€™t disappoint like 11th gen. I wouldnā€™t pay more than 200 for a 11700k

I mean its anyones guess at this point but if the leaks are somewhat true it definitely will be a very interesting launch.

If Zen 4 comes out next year it will probably have to compete against 13th gen rather than 12th gen.Ā
