It would really interesting to see AudioQuest cables tested. They are the “highest quality” Best Buy offers and have some pretty bold claims about how good their cables are. Some of their cables are $2295 for 2.5 feet (0.75m) and $4495 for 10 feet (3m).

I would love to see you test Monoprice Ultra Slim Certified Premium HDMI cables. Many people use these cables and it would be interesting to see if they are any good.

P.S. 1,000 HDMI cable!?

Suggestion: Get one of your staff that isn't tech savvy (maybe a nice challenge for Sarah) and go to your local whatever store where average joe would buy a TV and let her buy HDMI cables. Maybe it's even a good idea to go full secret shopper and ask for advice from a sales rep and see what cables she brings back.

Even tech ppl like most of us probably had at least once the moment where they were like "damn I really need X cable RIGHT NOW'' and it would be very useful if we knew what to get from the local store that would both work properly and not break the bank.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

A whole episode on Monoprice cables would great. I've bought so many of their cables over the years because I thought they were decent and cheap. Turns out they are just cheap based on this video :(

I would love, LOVE to see HDMI 2.1 and DP 1.3/1.4 and 2.0. Specifically how it relates to their High res/HD+ and HDR capability. I literally went through 6 HDMI and 4 DP cables to get HDR and 144hz to work correctly on my monitor. When I changed video cards from a 2080 to a 3080 Ti, I had to change cables.

I think this is an area where consumers can be sold a LOT of snake oil and promises, but not what they need. And covering multiple brands (like the top sellers from Amazon, Micro Center, etc. for both US and CAN) would be an awesome thing to do. Like maybe a multi part series. Considering I have cables I paid ~$10US for that out perform the ~$90US cables I have, that adds up to a lot of money for consumers.

You guys should make a cheap vs expensive cable video and tell us how much money you should spend to get a reliable cable.

Since there was a huge discussion about both the HDMI chip and the bundled cable inside the PS5, I would like to see an HDMI 2.1 Bandwidth test with that specific cable included in every PS5.

I recently bought a display port to usb c cable claiming to be a thunderbolt 3 cable  and after trying it on my iPad Air 4 and my roommates MacBook Pro we found it not to output any display

Silkland USB C to DisplayPort Cable 6.6ft 4K@60Hz, 2K@165Hz, [2021 Updated, Optimal Chip] [Thunderbolt 3 Compatible] to DP 1.2, with MacBook Pro/Air, iPad Pro 2018, XPS 15/13, Surface, Galaxy S20 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08V1MWXRM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_YV96GX12GSR7A1TZM5A0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

You all need to get one of these testers sent to Gamers Nexus!

With that any in-depth look at some of the longer Display Port and HDMI cables (> 10 Ft) would be great, anytime I need a long one, it is always trail and error...

Cables have been a nightmare for me. I need 15ft usb-b and DP1.4 cables for my standing desk computer. The specific trouble I’ve had are:

  • Long USB cables (15-20ft)
  • long DP cables
  • dp repeaters (complete crap)
  • usb repeaters (complete crap)
  • and even just regular DP cables if there anywhere near a power cable (computer or monitor)

Cable testers are fun. Though, the capabilities of a given cable tester can vary greatly.

Some can do simple stuff like check for continuity and see if the wires go where they should.
Others can test the isolation and see if the cable has some flaw, like a wire pinched in some housing or the like. (These testers can be expensive.)

Some will current test the cable, by sending a good amount of amps through it and see how much voltage is dropped over it. (Not always a practical test, especially for long cables.)

Some can test data rate by simply clocking data through them and seeing how it degrades. (Also tend to be expensive.)

Some will actually measure the RF properties of the cable itself. (If you have to ask the price, you probably can't afford it! (though, for RF folks, there is the NanoVNA for a hundred bucks or such that can do a fair bit.))

But a cable tester isn't magic.

They for an example won't really say much about how long the cable will survive out in the field.

They won't really inform you if you have a somewhat flaky wire connection.

In the end, an X-ray machine can actually be more suitable, but by the time one needs that level of certainty of the quality, then one is working with fairly high end stuff.

Though. This cable tester in the video is quite nice in it giving an actual eye diagram and loss figures too.

from long cables I guess HDMI or USB would be nice to test if they even work in lenght.

also to know if general, cheap or expensive cables "CAN" meet the standard or if a certain standard is just too hard at some point.

then again this doesn't test its performance in by amount of stress, if in a year it will be too stiff and break/fail anyways, around the port or other places.

if one can trust the tester with the testing, but I guess its good enough? 😛

I would say that any big respectable store should have a device like this. I would pay an extra buck for a cable if it gets tested on a device like this right in front of me.

I would love to see which of the top sellers of HDMI 2.1 are fake, specifically top of the reccomended on Amazon, BestBuy reccomended, etc. Specifically the top bc those are the first ones people see, and therefore the first ones they are going to buy when they see the 2.1 sticker.

I think putting that much bullshit near the tester equipment would be very bad for it.

I am looking to buy the Oculus Quest 2 to play games on my pc but to connect it I need a long cable, which is not included. The official oculus link cable is way too expensive and is type C to type C, which is useless to me because my computer doesn't have a usb c port. A video reviewing some of the cheaper usb type A to usb type C or even type C to type C (because I could always buy an adapter from C to A) would be incredibly useful to a lot of people.
