Corsair RMx 2018 vs 2021

Filingo

Are there any clear advantages for the 2021 version over the 2018? The 2018 is on a nice sale on Amazon today

Well, it seems like the 2018 is quieter.. so the ML fan is fancy but it's actually worse for those who prefer less noise.

And the other thing is achieving 70% efficiency at 2% load or something like that? I guess it's some new standard, beyond my knowledge though

It was a slight modification for European energy efficiency requirements. The 2018 apparently wasn't quite in spec.

How bad was it out of spec?

No.  The 70%+ efficiency @ 2% or < 10W is part of the CEC spec.  The RMx always met EU efficiency specs.

What is the efficiency of the 2018 version? And what are the issues with this? Or it's something related more to saving Earth and not wasting energy rather than PSU performance/reliability issues?

It's just an effort of California government to increase standby efficiency of electronics sold there, it's not just about PSUs, there's a whole bunch of other appliances this spec is applied for.

So the 2018 is actually better? 😄

Haha.... Nothing that the end user would notice/care about.  Essentially, the new version has an LLC controller that switches from LLC to a burst mode.  That's all.
