Tried once more to uninstall and reinstall the latest version keeping the data, no go. Moved the data folder and it's OK again indeed.

🤔 Has 1070, can't be arsed to try to get F@H working on my unraid, should I just toss it in a XP machine and see if it blows up the power supply?

Actually I don't even know if that machines power supply has the needed cables 😅

You mentioned the key...SSD.  Today's OSs have removed optimizations for running on HDs and included optimizations for running on SSDs instead.

Windows 10 optimized? lol, good joke... Windows 7 ran perfectly fine on a HDD, never used 8 so I can't vouch for it.

Then there's Linux... Tho weirdly Linus (🤣, typo) ran better on a IDE drive vs a SATA one...

I would never touch ME, I feel it was more of a gimmick for the year 2000 than anything. Tbh I might just try to use my Unraid, just it will be mighty tempting to move it upstairs for "heating" purpose, I mean "cooling"... I mean uh...

Also if I do i'll need anther 25-50ft Ethernet cable, because routing the first one was so much fun 😅

$10 10/100 switch and 2 6’ cables sounds much easier 😉

Ive run a 1080 off an Athlon II x64 so that core 2 Duo should work OK.

You can run a 1070 off a 6-pin but you have to Franken-mod the cable to fix the sense pins. I’ve run a 1060 off a 300W power supply with a Dual molex to 6-pin adapter and a 1070ti on the same adapter with a mod to the sense pins. You should power limit it though to 175W or so to keep the 2 12V lines from getting too hot.

I ran NT3.5 and 4 and Windows 2000 and just skipped that whole 95/98/Me mess and went to XP, Win 7 for a year then 10 on my Windows machines.

I did back in the day. I was using a Compaq Presario that shipped with ME, and it worked well (for what it was). I never bothered upgrading it, instead opting to replace it with a newer Athlon XP system running Windows XP.

Windows 8/8.1 actually run very well from mechanical hard drives, even better than Windows 7 on the same hardware in some cases.

Basically any Core Duo or Core 2 Duo system will run Windows 10. A bit slow these days, but they'll still run. The key is to use an SSD, even a super cheap one. Windows 10 performs terribly on mechanical hard drives no matter how powerful the computer itself is.

I know it's something we often joke about (using F@h machines and mining machines as heaters), but I actually do use mine for that purpose. My main desktop keeps one room warm, my NAS and secondary desktop keep the office warm (mainly for some pets in the same room), and another system keeps my bedroom warm. That lets me keep the heating turned down for the rest of the floor so I'm not heating unused spaces when I'm not in them.

No real place to put the switch tho lol. Had a range extender before I replaced my router last year (nearly 2 years now) and it was a pain in the ass to route a cable to.

The main issue is it running XP and the fact it has no wireless adaptor and the wireless router next to it has no Ethernet ports outside of the incoming one (Omada AC1350)

Not very keen on frankensteining power into a gpu like the 1070, I want to keep it as a backup in case my 5700XT does anything wonky.

My family went from 3.1 to 98SE to XP, I worked on 2000 at a work site. 98SE was not that bad and happy we skipped 95/98, school pcs loved crashing on 95 lol...

Yea at the beginning I regretted upgrading to 7 from XP but considering it was free one can't really complain.

If I do go the route of that computer I'll just buy the cheapest X unit and throw Linux on it, free easy and I know the computer will run it just fine. As someone who used a 2.5" HDD in my main system when the SSD died windows 10 actually worked "ok" once booted, but updates, rebooting, booting, logging in etc? lol... Go make a sandwich and it might be done by then 😐  (unless updates, then go to bed)

I did a test booting Windows 10 on my Ryzen machine with an SSD vs a 5400RPM 2TB hard drive. Same fresh OS setup, with only Afterburner, Ryzen Master and Firefox installed. It took almost 3 mins for it to boot up and get to the desktop on the hard drive. On an SSD? 10 seconds. 😵

I also resuscitated an older laptop with an i5-430 @ 1.3Ghz running Win10 by swapping out the hard drive for an SSD. Tech tip of the decade.

Desktop 1 : Ryzen 5 3600 (O/C to 4Ghz all-core) | Gigabyte B450M-DS3H | 24GB DDR4-2400 Crucial(O/C to 2667) | GALAX RTX 2060 6GB | CoolerMaster MWE 650 Gold

Desktop 2 : i5 10400 | 32GB DDR4-3200(@ 2667Mhz) |  EVGA GTX 1070 SC 8 GB | Corsair CV450M

Laptop : ASUS ROG Strix G17 : i7-10750H, 16GB RAM, GTX 1660Ti 6GB(90W), 1TB NVMe SSD

Hope you are all well. I've not been around much recently. Had my meds messed up by the docs and was in hospital over the weekend which was fun. The funeral is on wednesday so I will 100% not be available for that day.
