First off, @GOTSpectrum - I'm sorry to hear about your uncle. Take care of yourself during this difficult time.

Second, I agree with the current event requirements - my quad-core i5 3450 was capable of around 20-30kPPD on the pre-COVID WUs, and a friend's 2C/4T i3-5005U does around 8-10k. So anyone CPU folding on a quad core machine bought in the last 5 years (or better) should be able to meet the requirements. The 20 days of activity is a good, stringent requirement that doesn't dissuade people from participating with weaker hardware whilst also enforcing a certain level of participation.

Desktop 1 : Ryzen 5 3600 (O/C to 4Ghz all-core) | Gigabyte B450M-DS3H | 24GB DDR4-2400 Crucial(O/C to 2667) | GALAX RTX 2060 6GB | CoolerMaster MWE 650 Gold

Desktop 2 : i5 10400 | 32GB DDR4-3200(@ 2667Mhz) |  EVGA GTX 1070 SC 8 GB | Corsair CV450M

Laptop : ASUS ROG Strix G17 : i7-10750H, 16GB RAM, GTX 1660Ti 6GB(90W), 1TB NVMe SSD

Me : trying to compete with a sad oced e8400 (4.3)

It says this thing does around 6-8k ppd but i keep on running into issues, maybe ill try doing abit more tuning to the rams see if that makes this 13 year old potato any faster

I saw your posts on the first page, I am curious to see how it pans out! Core clocks won't be the limiting factor, support for instruction sets would.

Well, I've got F@H downloaded on my computer. No idea how any of this really worked before today but hopefully I'll be able to make some good contributions before, during and after the event. I've been busy with work and life so my 3070 isn't getting as much use for its intended purpose as I'd like but hopefully this will give it a good workout.

This is also pretty cool to me because I do actually do molecular calculations at work, though I only ever do them on molecules that are much, much smaller than proteins. It'd probably be cool to see if I could just run a calculations server for my department that's better than the dinosaur of a server we have, but I also don't really think it's worth jumping through the hoops for a license of the calculations suite we use.

It's entirely possible that I misinterpreted/misread your topic and/or question. This happens more often than I care to admit. Apologies in advance.

I can fold on my q6600, instructions arent a problem

I could use some help with this!

Hey all 🙂

New to this forum and to folding in general, usually just watch LTT videos but recently got a new PC, AMD 5900X and an 3070TI,

I just thought when working i do not use the PC a lot so i can just start folding what i saw on the channel some time ago and its awesome to help.

Sorry for the very beginner question, but is there something i must look out for? Since i just ran the program registered, put in the secret key and now running on "light" since at medium and high the CPU was constant at 100% usage.

I do have an NZXT Kraken X53 watercooler installed on the CPU.

Just looking for in general tips 🙂

Edit:

I did read the introduction to folding and found you can limit the cores used in the CPU. As i find that AMD recommends 90 Degree celcius max for CPU and that with the light folding settings and letting the F@H system choose amount of cores (12) it went to 90.8celcius before i limited it to 6 Cores.

I cannot find if we can limit the usage of each core. Like using 10 cores to fold buit all max at 50% usage? This would give me peace of mind knowing it cant go to high.

Just don’t fold on the cpu

It’s a lot slower than gpu WUs and gets a lots less ppd

I could use some help with this!

Wouldnt it be that certain tasks done by GPU and done by CPU are different and both are needed for those projects?

No, not really.

since for both it’s protein folding, rhere am really the same task. But the gpu is much faster at folding

There are some projects that are CPU or GPU only, but generally speaking you will get more work done running just your GPU. If however, you want to fold on both make sure you have at least 2-4 threads free to manage the GPU and system in the background

Thanks for the insights 🙂 and to only fold on GPU i would just set the CPU to 0 and then use the "moderate" or "high" preset?

You would want to delete the CPU slot and set the client to high

Signed up!

Don't know how much i can participate though, since the energy prices is soaring in EU at this time.

We are currently seeing 3-4x electricity prices, so i have to keep an eye on the consumption.

No, you can't tell the Folding client to utilize a thread at a specific utilization. As you've found you just have to reduce the total number of threads used for CPU Folding and let the OS's Scheduler do it's thing.

12 cores or 12 threads?

If your hitting 90.8C folding on all cores without PBO or an overclock then you might want to check the mount on that AIO as it seems high. Might also just be the motherboard has an overly aggressive set of thermal targets (the AMD equivalent of Core Enhancement on Intel).

I'm seeing (26C Ambient):

75C on 5950x on EVGA 240 CLC (30 threads of BOINC and 1 thread feeding Folding Slots

76.5C on 3950x on NH-D15 (29 threads BOINC and 2 threads feeding Folding Slots

78C on 3900x on NH-D15 78C (21 threads of BOINC and 2 threads feeding Folding Slots

73C on 9900k on EVGA 280 CLC (13 threads BOINC and 2 threads feeding Folding Slots)

But I've also reduced the Power Targets in BIOS for the AMD CPUs and am running a -200MHz AVX offset on the 9900k.

I am in, I will see if 10~14M PPD has any value up in this joint. I also plan to make good on an older promise that I was too lazy to fulfill and toss in some gift cards towards the event. Oh and @TVwazhereI fully plan to break the script on the regular, just be forewarned.

Intel 10900X and 10850KA. NVIDIA 3090FE and EVGA 3090 K|NGP|N Hydro Copper. 196GB RAM. 2x Corsair AX1200I power supplies, $6K in Corsair Hydro-X Custom cooling all wrapped up in a Phantex Enthoo Elite dedicated to supporting F@H (User ID PEZUI on team LTT! 223518)
