PC won't turn on unless I CMOS reset? Asus B450m motherboard

beuteugeu

Hello, I have this strange problem:

Some time ago, my pc started to need several pushes of the turn on button to eventually turn on. I would sometimes press it for a few seconds, then release, press many times, etc, until the pc turned on.

Over the last few days, it stopped turning on when doing that, and now I have to use a screwdriver to reset CMOS, and then it will turn on in a single push of the power button.

I have already changed the CMOS battery, and it has not solved the problem.

I also tried updating my BIOS to the latest version, and it also did not solve the issue.

My specs are:

Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600

Motherboard: Asus Prime B450M Gaming/BR

SSD: WD Black SN750 500GB M.2 2280 NVMe, WDS500G3X0C

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8) DDR4 3200MHz Black, CMK16GX4M2Z3200C16

PSU:  Corsair HX Series Modular HX750 750 Watts 80 Plus Platinum, CP-9020137-WW

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

Thanks for your help, time and understanding.

What happens if you unplug the power button from the motherboard and short the connectors it plugs in to with a screwdriver?

I tried and it worked. I've now made some "modifications" to the power button, and I will answer tomorrow again, to see if it was indeed the problem - but I think it really was.

SHould that be the case, any idea why clearing the CMOS would make it work, while just pressing the button as usual didnt?

Personally I don't really know for sure...

Though I found this forum thread explaining the CMOS reset in more detail:
