Riser Cables makes my RTX 3080 slower

What that says is the card is capable of running 4.0 x16, but it's currently running at 3.0 x1. 3.0 is normal since it's all your machine supports but x1 is not normal under load.

 

So if your riser's connectors are clean and really plugged correctly on both ends and into the top mobo slot it likely broke during the swap.

Hello peeps how is everyone doing?

I had a phantek vertical GPU mount and just learned about PCIe 3.0 and 4.0. My Vega 56 was working very well when I was using the riser and now that I upgraded to a MSI 3080 LHR, im getting 60 fps at 100% usage on starcraft 2/battlefield 1. 

I tried to go into the bios to change the PCIe to 3.0 but i cant seem to find the setting although I'm following the steps correctly (based on YouTube and forums). Now for my issue I cant seem to find anything litterally anything online so if anyone can give me any tip to change PCIe from 4.0 to 3.0.

I7 10700 KF

T-Force 32Gb 16x2 running at 2933 Mhz

Z490-F ROG Strix (latest BIOS 2103)

10th gen doesn't do PCIe 4.0, so it's 3.0 already.

But I am running PCIe 4.0 and I can confirm based on CPU-z and also since ive tried both ways with and without the Riser and theres a huge difference. Yes I know use the GPU without the riser but I want to have a vertical GPU and some users are able to change from 4.0 to 3.0.

You cannot be running PCIe 4.0 with a 10700KF and Z490.

 

What does GPU-Z say with the little test running?

 

You DO have the riser connected to the top PCIe slot, right?

My riser is connected to the main slot and im not running a test with GPU-Z using just CPU-Z to check and ive noticed something. When im the Mainboard tab I see Bus Specs PCI-Express 3.0 however below in the Graphic interface I see

 

Bus: PCI-Express 4.0 and current

link width: x1

Max supported: x16

Current Link Speed: 2.5 GT/s

Max supported: 16.0 GT/s

That's why I ask to check with GPU-Z, it's better at that and has a little built-in "stress test" to use to load the card because when it's idle power saving measures will reduce the link speed making the reading irrelevant.

Okay downloaded and Idk if I should wait but im using 100% at 1920Mhz 64 Degree. And it is also saying PCIe X16 4.0 @ x1 3.0

As said above, it can't be running at 4.0. CPU and board both don't support it.

As for frame rate issues, when you installed the new GPU, did you use DDU in safe mode? You could be having issues with AMD drivers conflicting with the NVIDIA ones.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

any advice on what I should do then? maybe buy another riser cable im trying to look for a 4.0 one. There is the ROG Strix RIser cable 3.0 do you think it will perform better than the one i currently have?

So basically its not a driver issue since I used DDU already and same problem happened when I used a 3070 Ti and I thought the 3070Ti was bad then I bought this RTX 3080 and I used it without the riser and it was working fine but then I used the vertical yesterday and im back to low frame rates.

to answer your initial question, you can change the PCI-E gen in Asus bios usually here:
Advanced -> System Agent (SA) Configuration -> PEG Port Configuration

"pci-e link speed" can be set to "gen3"

 

ive heard weird things happening when on "auto" settings with 30series cards on z490, so ill just provide the answer to your question.

But chances are that your riser is faulty.. (really common, even with expensive ones)

why would you want a 4.0 if you can't use it? that would be like spending extra on gen4 nvme when mobo only supports gen3?

I don't understand how any of this work. All I know was that If i plug my 3080 directly into the motherboard i get all the performance I need so 144fps on every game with vsync on. But when i use the riser to have a vertical gpu mount it gets slow this is why.  I want to use the riser it looks better in my build

it didn't work im still getting the same result 😞 hovering around 70 fps

man, your riser is broken. as you saw from your GPU_Z result, with the riser it is only running at 3.0x1 speed. it should be 3.0x16. You need a new riser cable. if you insist on getting pcie gen 4 riser it's going to cost a lot more than just getting what you actually need which is a 3.0 riser.

sure, I see it's $50 on amazon. Really though I don't understand the need for vertical mount. Are you staring at your computer case more often than the actual screen/monitor? At least in the meantime you should have the GPU mounted normally so that you can get full performance. Maybe leave it for a week or two and see if you get used to normal mount. Vertical seems silly to me - just my opinion. Best of luck.

Yes this is exactly what im gonna do and also I have the RTX 3080 MSI which has nice rgb and aesthetic if mounted vertically and all of case has rgb synced and everything so this kinda the cherry on top 😛

are you sure about that? I do have 2 nvme on my motherboard. Which one should I try removing?
