It has to do with impedance, or how much resistance there is to Electric force. Many professional speakers and headphones have high impedance, and require amplifiers Laptop speakers usually have lower impedance.

But it sounds like you have a different problem. What's the model of laptop?

Laptop speakers are fairly efficient, they move a relatively large amount of air for their size, but they're actually significantly less efficient than most larger speakers. Regarding their voltage, even bookshelf or floor standing speakers usually run under 5V, they just require monstrous amounts of amperage.

As for high quality, they aren't. They're not bad, and they've gotten progressively more not bad over time, but they're not high quality.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You might have a damaged cable, if you're willing to crack it open to check.

Sorry, I can't find any similar issues on the internet. Damaged cable is my best guess, especially if the sound coming out is distorted

Consider attaching it to external speakers to see if its a software/driver problem or a hardware problem
