My friend hasnt been able to use his harddrive because it cant be detected by windows? can u guys help

You might need to run computer management as an admin.  Open a command prompt as administartor (type cmd in start menu, right click on it and select run as admin) then type "compmgmt.msc" in the command prompt.  Now try to initialize the disk.

you might just need to assign it a letter and make it active, try using diskpart through cmd, there are plenty of quick guides online if you are unsure of how to do that.
