Question about connecting an external display to a laptop.

Hi there! Basically, I'm looking for a laptop for college but the one I want only has a 60hz display and because of that I want to ask this question. If I have a laptop that is 60Hz and I put it on a 144Hz monitor with I get 144Hz on the monitor or will it automatically get set to 60Hz without a way to change it?

This is the laptop I want: https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/dell-laptops/new-xps-15-laptop/spd/xps-15-9510-laptop/xn9510evbes

Sorry if this is a dumb question I just legit don't know.

You don't want to mirror the displays. You would only output to the external monitor. Basically turning the laptop screen off. That will allow you to set a mode that wouldn't work for the internal display but will work for your external.

But don't expect that everything will run smooth at 144 if laptop was created with 60Hz in mind.
