Noisy hard drive only on startup

n1ckst1ck

Hello

Lately I've been experiencing a very noisy HDD whenever I start up my computer. Normally whenever I boot my device the HDD ramps up to quiet down after 10s (when I enter my login screen).

Nowadays the "quieting down" part doesn't happen. It keeps this ramped up pace and does not slow down. I've ran a storage test programs (the one from Seagate) but all tests came out OK.

Oddly enough, when I put the device in sleep mode the HDD logically stops working and when I then wake up the device it just remains as quiet as per usual. Any ideas what could cause this?

Specs are below, no overclocking or anything. If there's anything else you need, let me know!

Thanks a lot!

Speccy is an awful program
Use HWINFO64

Also check your disk's SMART statistics using a program like CrystalDiskInfo
Also make sure that your OS is on your SSD rather than your HDD.

80+ Certification doesn't mean shit.

Noisy HDD usually does not mean good. Might not be failing yet, but spin-up should not be too loud.

SSDs are a good alternative. Price per GB is obviously higher, but still...

This is not always the case.
Sometimes hard drives make noises on start up due to the content that is being consumed on them. If something is constantly read/writing to the drive, it'll make noise for as long as the read/write takes.

HDD Noise does not always constitute a Dead HDD

Yeah, but a bit of an indication, that all is not 100% fine. On the other hand it might work for years.

Hi thanks for your response! Noted about Speccy.

CrystalDiskInfo shows no problems whatsoever.

And yes my OS is on my SSD.

Monitor Task Manager / Resource Monitor on start ups, you're probs just constantly reading/writing ot the drive on startup. 🙂

are you sure it is the HDD?

Yes! I've tried starting the computer without it plugged in and the rattling/noise wasn't there.

It's just weird that it didn't do that for the last 3 years. I've tried leaving my computer idle for 10 minutes and it was still making the noise.

Nevertheless, thanks for your replies. The issue is more annoying rather than something wrong I think 😄

After a while you can install / use new software that takes advantage of your hardware in different ways.

It could also be that the motors are going bad, and that’s not something that SMART will always detect as a failure.

See if there’s activity on startup using the tools that MSFT gives with its OS. If there’s no HDD usage, it’s most likely time to replace the drive.
